Very annoying Popup
« on: March 25, 2004, 04:20:53 AM »
I've come across a very annoying pop-up these past few weeks, and it only shows up when I visit Planet Gamecube. It's a small pop up that asks "Do you want to Run IE Browser Enhancer?". I click Cancel but it just pops right back up and won't let me shuffle it to the background or operate any browser windows, and usually results in me having to go to the CTRL+ALT+DEL window and shut down ALL my browsers. It's really getting annoying, especially when I'm in the middle of an article. I'm pretty sure it's not my ISP because this is the only website it pops up on.

i've never seen that one.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Get a browser with popup blocking (or, if that doesn't help, one that isn't IE )

It's funny becuase I have gotten that to and I use Firefox. Except the fact that when I click cancel it goes away. So, I would highly consider getting Firefox or Mozilla.

I wouldn't consider "get another browser" as a decent solution.  If Josh doesn't want to get a new browser just to browse the damn site he shouldn't have to.  I have never gotten this ad but I think the company that made it should fix it.  Though I guess posting here isn't really going to get them to do it.

Problem is, I don't know which freakin' company it is. I'm not about to press "OK" and get some stupid bandwidth sucking tracker in the computer I just reformated.

I'm not familiar with this ad at all...if you could give us the name of it or the program it's trying to install, we might be able to track it down and make sure it's taken off the site.

Yes I get this too and I DO have a pop-up blocker(google tool bar). I clicked on it and it's safe because an other pop-up comes up which resembles a more traditional download window which lists all the great features one can get. Unfortunately this probably means it's a legitimate ad and the continual pop-uping is an error.

Ian: I had to get another browser to access the NoE site, so where's the problem? You need neither root nor money for that.

The banner this popup originates from situates horizontally at the upper-right corner of the site.  Moving your cursor over the banner (such as when trying to click the Close-window button) triggers the popup question.  Since I have a habit of quickly closing browser windows as soon as I see no interesting info, I ran into this popup a lot.

There's another horrible popup...  It runs the MS FTP (ftp.exe) system utility to download/install a program called "o" to my desktop.  It also plants a program called "INDFILEB.exe" into my startup queue, which my guess is for re-installing the program in case it's partially removed.  INDFILEB.exe can be found under Windows/System (win98se).  You may have to boot to DOS (hah! anyone remember that?) to delete it while Windows isn't running.

If someone removes the popup, please give us the address of the agency that issued it. I always wanted to rip out the hearts of some of those spyware makers.
