Zelda RPG
« on: March 24, 2004, 01:40:58 PM »
Lets continue it here and not totally overruin the other thread.

For a Zelda RPG I would want something like that of Neverwinter Nights, and Tales of Syphonia.

-Most of the game I want it to be like most RPGs but the thing I want different is the battle engine.
-All monster battles except boss battles should be fought using more complex fighting system but you would have 4 different types of Melee. Two-weapon, two-handed weapon, single-handed weapon, or Link's weapon and shield.  Same with missile weapons only some would be slow and powerful or rapid and weak.
-Magic should also be controlled by voice, computer, or another player.
-In a way the multiplayer part of it would be like FF:CC or D&D.
-When it comes to bosses I prefer if the arena changed like in the Final Fantasy battling modes and then it would concentrate on the boss only.  Basically it would be ToS.

I'd rather see it stick with the Mario RPG formula. I think that Neverwinter Nights is just pushing it.

If you mean RPG as in levelling up and team manangement and such, I'd say I don't want Zelda to have anything to do with it.
Zelda has always been a one-person-against the odds adventure game, clearing temples and fighting bosses - not facing random battles in attempts to level up some more. It's just not right to go and throw that all away and make it essentially a FF hybrid game.

Most of those other features such as customised fighting styles could be implemented in an action/adventure game in the mould of OoT or WW.
Mario and Luigi:SS was good because the co-operative moves and strange storyline made it fresh and just plain fun. Hooray for different style RPGs.

So? If Mario jumps off a bridge does that mean Link should too?

I'll be super lazy and do a copy-and-paste job from the other thread.

I want a Zelda RPG to have:

- not cel-shaded graphics. It would look more like Skies of Arcadia.
- like in the Mario RPGs battles are not random. The enemies are all visible.
- Link is naturally the main character. Other members of the party include Zelda (who can transfrom from Zelda to Sheik) and some other guys like a Goron and a Zora.
- The game is full 3D with no fixed camera angles. Areas are wide 3D open areas each around the size of the world in Ocarina of Time. An overworld map seperates these areas thus making the complete world quite large.
- Level up system is similar to Super Mario RPG so the highest level isn't some stupid low amount like five.
- Battles are turn based and very similar to Mario RPG. Realtime interaction like timed hits are present but unlike M&L are not required to play the game. MP is for each character rather than shared like in Mario RPG. Each character has character specific abilities beyond regular attacks and spells. Link for example can use his bow or boomerang for different effects. Some enemies may require you to use certain abilities and items.
- Aside from the battles the rest of the game is all in real time. Link can interact with objects like he can in the other Zelda games and all the puzzles are in real time.
- Like in Paper Mario Link can attack an ememy before the battle and thus get a pre-emptive strike. Enemies can however do the same to Link.
- Like in most Zelda games the game will require you to travel between parallel worlds. Either different dimensions or different time periods. Whatever fits the story better.
- Link never talks like how Mario never talks in Super Mario RPG.

I think for a Zelda RPG the ideal situation would be to make the game fairly standard RPG fare that's very user friendly.  A Zelda RPG game would grab the attention of non-RPG fans so the last thing they should do is make a really hardcore unique battle system that will have limited appeal.  This game would be for Zelda fans more than RPG fans.

Even if I said Neverwinter Nights or not the only real main difference between a lot of RPGs is the battle system and if it had a character customization.  When you're out there in the field what can you do?  You can change armor, weapons, talk to people, accept sidequests, etc  Basically that part makes Neverwinter and FF the same.  I only want the battles to be multiple characters with their own specialties battling monsters in real-time but when it comes to bosses you would have it ToS style.  Sorry I just prefer to do a combo with Link's sword instead of choose his attack.  Choosing attack I prefer if it was a magic-user.

You can do that.  In the "real" Zelda games.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *rolls eyes*

Don't take that seriously.  I was thinking about Link in a ToS style battle arena but he would have a much more complicated fighting system like Powerstone.

The more that I think about it, the more I think that this game could be a real possibility. I mean Mario is just a platformer and it has sport, fighting and rpg games made based off of him. The Gamecube did nothing really "new" with any of their games, so an RPG Zelda game would be a great launch game for the N5.

Draygaia you wound me, sir.

Fine if you want a more complex combo then play Soul Calibur II.

My point is that if you want real time stuff that's what the whole Zelda series is about anyway so it makes no sense to make a Zelda RPG with real time battles.  If they're going to do that then they can just make a real Zelda game.

Actually it would make sense to apply Link's "special attacks" like his downward thrust and spin attack as his "magic attacks" and each would take a certain number of magic points to use...ToS has an excellent battle system, but I think a Zelda RPG should try something more original...

Zelda MGS style.  Built around the idea of the Gerudo base.  Solid Elf!

Zelda Outdoor Madness.  AHAHAHAHAHA  Link is in the outdoor and you have to learn how to set traps, how to hunt, fish, built boats, train horses, grow food, score Kokiri chicks!  Man all that Outdoor goodness.
