For those who didn't buy Beyond Good & Evil...
« on: February 17, 2004, 04:23:27 PM »
No, I'm not gonna scream "Buy this game!" from the top of my lungs, nor will I harass you for not having the game.

What I want to know is why didn't you? I mean, this game seems like a perfect fit for a Gamecuber's library considering the type of games that sell well on the NGC.

My objective with this thread is to understand why BG&E failed to sell - Was a marketing issue? Did people thought Zelda was enough to fill their craving for adventure games? Did you think it's box was uninteresting? - Call it a morbid curiosity if you will, but I just want to know.

Yeah, I think they really just misfired on their timing.  I was planning on getting it before the price drop, but just hadn't gotten the chance yet.  The new price inspired me to go ahead, but I still haven't had time to finish it.  Companies need to learn that unless they're putting out something mind-blowing, they can't just stick a new game on the market against huge franchises.

Well, I did buy it, so I guess I'm not supposed to reply here, but I think BG&E was a ton of TONS better than PoP. Somehow, Ubi got the media behind the Prince though, and BG&E got burried underneith all the other press.

I got PoP, played it to death. Magic story, great puzzles too. Kakalukia!

As for BG&E, I just haven't had much time for games in the past month or so. PoP was the last new game I bought, so its not like I've been buying other games. It was just a case of bad timing I think, and no real advertising (but its always like that in Australia ;______

I was going to also buy it before the price drop, but for some reason I now feel a lack of enthuasism when the game is mentioned...Don't know why...

i got the game as soon as the price dropped to $20.  there were 2 reasons i didn't get it prior to that.

the first is i heard it was a short game with not a lot of replay value.  this is actually the same reason i haven't picked up PoP yet--i'm waiting for a price drop.

the second reason was i just built a new pc in november.  this is my first new pc since june of 1998.  suffice to say, i've missed out on many recent pc games because my computer just wasn't powerful enough to play them.  now that my pc is up to snuff, i've been borrowing games from my friends and trying to catch up on what i've missed out on.

No, even if I agreed that it was, that doesn't necessarily make it mind-blowing.  It's a good adventure game, but there was never a point that it really stood out from the crowd.  I think it's similar to what happened with Eternal Darkness - the people that play it, like it a lot, but something about it just doesn't draw the crowds at a glance.  Maybe it's the weird title or all the bizarre names or just the color scheme with miss green lips on the cover.

I bought it (after the price drop), but I haven't played it yet... I have no room for the massive 55 block memory file it requires on my memory card!
But yeah, like Bloodworth said, it was just released at the really wrong time. You don't want to release a game without any established characters when you're going up against more recognizable games like Mario Kart and 1080 and even Ubisoft's Prince of Persia.
I feel if Ubisoft held off the game and released it around this time, when not too many high profile games are coming out, it would've done a LOT better.

I haven't bought it for a few reasons.

1. When it came out there were other titles getting priority.  My birthday is in December so usually I get two games that month.  In this case I got Mario Kart for my birthday and Ikaruga for Christmas.  Even though these were gifts and I thus could easily afford to buy BG&E I just didn't have to time to budget three games in a month.  To me there's no point in buying a game if I'm currently playing something else.  It will just get ignored.  Timing continues to be a problem since I just got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles so again a title like BG&E is going to take a back seat.

2. It just wasn't available in my area.  I swear I never saw a physical Gamecube copy of this game until about two weeks ago.

3. It's supposedly quite short so why should I bother to buy it when if I rent it for a week I can probably beat it.

4. The assumption is made that since it's sort of like Zelda and we Nintendo fans love Zelda that naturally we should love BG&E as well.  Well that's sort of true but it's not like we play nothing but these games.  I find that when I buy third party games I usually buy ones that are different from anything Nintendo makes.  If it's anything like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, or Pokemon the "real deal" is getting priority.  Since Wind Waker came out earlier in the year I'm not really in the mood to play another adventure title so soon after.  If one was released this April then I probably would try it.  Plus Ubisoft themselves released PoP around the same time and not only is it a similar type of game but it's arguably superior.  There's a reason why Mario and Donkey Kong games aren't released at the same time.  Ubisoft basically created their own competition by releasing two similar playing titles at the same time.

I think it's the mood of the cover. It basically says "don't buy me, I'm a cheap low-quality multiplatform release riddled with bugs!" Yes, I know, the game is good, but that's the message the cover gives me. It's the same with a lot of other games, though with almost all of them it's true.

this and Sphinx are the next console games I plan on getting after I play through Metal Gear about 4 times and finish the 10 GBA RPG's that I have gotten in he past two months(Golden Sun, now its time for some Lost Age, boktai , and some FFTA)

my main reason for not getting it was gamestops buy 2 get one free pre-owned deal. I literally cleaned house, and since then I have been trying to finish these before I move on and get these games.

Also I think that if sphinx and BG&E were GCN exclusives they would have sold through the roof. Personally I own very few non exclusives games for any system I have. Its not that I dislike 3rd party games, its that one title always gets the shaft, so I would rather support the people who focus on making a title for one platform and making it the best title they can.

yeah...some games just dont get good cover art....you can usually tell crappy games by their covers, the only exception is when the game is already in an established series where a crappy cover is ok.

I agree about the cover art.  I don't like it and it fails to grap my attention.

It's coming out in OZ soon, and selling for AUD $49.95.  I'm seriously thinking of getting it.  Even though I got pissed at the PC demo, which failed to start up the demo and crash my PC...

Well i didn't buy it because it's not even released here yet. I don't think i will buy it anyway. It takes up too many blocks on the memory card, plus it's got a crap boxart, boring looking characters that look like they're from generic series #139, no flashy features. Overall it just has nothing even remotely interesting or eyecatching. Fission Mailed Ubi-Soft. Actually, im grateful that they just "released" it, without planning to delay it to ensure better sales. I hate when companies delay games to fill in empty slots and make more money, it should be about the gamers.. meh.
