We're almost finishing up fixing things I think.  Hopefully we'll be back to normal in a couple weeks at the most.  2003: The year of unmentionable technical problems. :-/

That problem turned me on to the forums though so it wasn't completely horrible.

I think it's fine to use the forums to post news.  It allows people to post their comments more quickly and efficiently, and saves you the work of having to put the articles in two places at once.  It's actually one of the reasons that I signed up here, actually.

Well, go with whatever works, I guess.

Actually, once we moved to these forums, the site code allowed us to do that automatically. So when things are running normally, we just post to the site, and the code handles putting things in the forums.

Would it be possible to put all of our responses on the main page of the site?  I know it would kind of risk spam attacks, but it would give pgc a cool fan side feel to it.

Back when we designed our current layout, we made the executive decision to seperate user comments from the news stories.  Although we here at Late Night...er...PGC want our site to have a strong user community, we felt a fully-integrated talkback on our site would be too much of a distraction.  I know I don't like seeing "MAN thaz sukz I hat u s0ny xbox rulz" at the bottom of an otherwise professional story.  If memory serves me correctly, GameSpot used to have such a feature, but they tore it down--probably for the same reason.

That being said, I haven't found the reader responses on the same page to be very distracting.  I guess we just have better forum members!  Perhaps I'll push for a reevaluation of such a "Recently Heard" feature in the future...

I know its gonna be bad, but if you make it require registration and have some hard core moderation with ip bannings, it *could* work.

it could, but then the effort goes up due to the need for constant moderation, it's just easier how it is now (well not NOW, but the way they used todo it sans  technical difficulties)

talkback started out attached to the news and not in the forums...though i guess the old replies are wiped out for the old articles...in any case i have a few talk back responses from old forum goers....though i printed them.....so id have to find them and type them all otu manually..it'll be worth it though when i do...

is there any way to make it so the pgc staff's news comments post in the forums?

typically, i just the news articles through the forums , rather than select them from the main page.  however, i'm interested to see if the staff has anything particularly interesting to say.

I'm not sure but I think if the person who writes the story includes comments when the orginially post it then their comments are included in the forum post. As for the rest of the staff comments, I have no clue.

Obi is right.  However, it may be possible to convert the later staff comments into talkback replies.  I'll look into it.
