Need A great shoot 'em up game
« on: January 27, 2004, 02:11:38 PM »
I have a nintendo GameCube.
So far we have a couple of games for the kids, and "Burnout".

I NEED something along the lines of Quake or something "better".

Is there such a thing for GameCube yet?

Any input will be appreciated.

Check out TimeSplitters 2. It doesn't quite feature the gore factor of the Quake games, but it's just as fast paced. Oh, and stay away from 007: Agent Under Fire and Turok Evolution on GameCube. Handy hint.

Metroid Prime is an incredibly awesome first person game, but it's not much like Quake or anything.  There is first person combat, but it relies heavily on exploring, some problem solving. . . more innovative than most shoot-em up games.  Very good, but not much like Quake, in my opinion.

If you went into MP thinking quake, you'd hate it.  Take all pre-conceived notions of FPS out of your head before you load up MP.  Also, I enjoyed Agent Under Fire, it is just very short and a bit easy.

Whenever I hear the term shoot 'em up I never think of an FPS.  I guess I'm too old fashioned.

Anyway like someone else mentioned go with Timesplitters 2.  That is easily the best FPS on the Cube and it has amazing multiplayer.  Metroid Prime is a great game but it is NOT a FPS, at least in the traditional sense.  It's more like a Zelda-style game with a first person view.  Although I think it's a great game if you want a shooter stay away from it because you'll be disappointed.  Get Metroid Prime only if you like the original Metroid games or Zelda.

If I want to play an FPS then I just get out my N64 and play Goldeneye. That is the most thought out, well designed and tasteful FPS ever...In my opinion.

I had this craving a few weeks ago and picked up Dead To Rights. Defintly go for it.. it fills up that gotta shoot um up! Blood and gore! craving you've been felling. Its also a pretty decent game with a good storyline and its cheap too.

serious same: the next encounter is coming out in a few months.  it's looking to be pretty good.  it's a lot like timesplitters--not much thinking, just pure carnage.  plus, at $20 you can't go wrong.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Heh, so did I- even though I'm younger than most people here, when I saw this thread I thought of scrolling shooters, like Gradius or of the such, not FPS's.

In any case, if you're looking for a shooter on the Gamecube, Timesplitters 2 is really your only option- good thing it's an INCREDIBLY good game, far superior to Halo, or even Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, in my opinion. If you want an ACTUAL shooter, check out the amazingly difficult Ikaruga.

*attaches fake beard and walking frame* darn tootin' Ian, in my day shoot 'em up ment top down / side scrolling shooter, usually involving some form of aircraft, beit a space ship (think R-Type) a helicopter (think silkworm, swiv) or some other form of vehicle. BRING BACK THE SHUMP >=o

and back on topic, the cube has sorta slim pickings in teh FPS stakes we have erm.. TS2 which some people don't like because of the cube's control, and er.. Geist is coming out at some stage this year (i think), so either grab some for the PC or buy old consoles and get REAL shoot 'em ups ^_^

oh and get Ikaruga, get it now.

OUT OF DATE.

why must you push PC games on people who did not ask for them?

I would recommend Timesplitters, true crime, MOH frontline,  Dead to Rights.

Eh, cubed, I think the question open ended, or else this would be in the Gamecube Discussion (although I made the assumption he was referring to the Gamecube specifically myself).

Why must I suggest excellent games?  Great question cubed, I will think about it next time.

frontline?  The bastard child of Allied Assault you mean?  Allied Assault>Frontline, ask anyone whom has played both.
