Nintendo Announces Famicom Mini Games for GBA
« on: January 13, 2004, 06:15:00 PM »
The classics are back. Update: There's a matching system too.

Nintendo has recently announced a series of Game Boy Advance games. These games are all re-releases of classic Famicom games from way back when. The titles will include both first and third party games. They are priced at 2000 Yen ($19) a piece and will be released on February 14th. Here is a list of the first batch.

  • Super Mario Bros
  • Donkey Kong
  • Ice Climbers
  • Excitebike
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Pacman (Namco)
  • Xevious (Namco)
  • Mappy (Namco)
  • Bomberman (Hudson)
  • Star Soldier (Hudson)

Update: Alongside the release of the Famicom Mini line of games will come a release of the Famicom style Game Boy Advance SP. This system was previously only available during a special promotion. It is colored to match the original Famicom's color scheme. The only difference between the promotional and retail versions of this system will be the color of the buttons.

Hmm this is pretty cool, but it would have been nice to have a few games bundled together.

It sounds cool.  I've owned and loved every nintendo system ever released except for the virtul-boy.  I'm an old school gamer and I love to see classics re-released but I don't like this.  Basically nintendo is charging 19.99 for games that you can get at funco land or on ebay for $5.00 at the most.  Instead of trying to pimp their old library to a new audience I would prefer if they would try to inovate.

This is a nice idea, but they're going about it all wrong. They seriously need to BUNDLE these games over several game packs. Heck, you could even have one cartridge for each developer... Nintendo NES Pack, Hudson NES Pack, Namco NES Pack...
I also find it hard to buy a copy of Donkey Kong for twenty bucks when I could just go out and get the e-Reader version for like three bucks. Or just download it off my copy of Animal Crossing. Or just pop my original copy in my NES. I don't think these will make the cross over the Pacific over here, because these WON'T sell, at least not in their current state.

Nice selection, but I have to agree that there's not much sense in buying these games for twenty bucks.  Some are included with Animal Crossing, and a few are even on e-Reader cards.  I understand why each one can't be any cheaper than this (because the catridges themselves are expensive), but like you guys have said, the obvious solution would be to bundle several games on each cartridge and sell it for full price.  Weird.  I suppose the graphics and sound aren't being redone either.  These games seem more like collector's items (for the Famicom's 20th anniversary) than legitimate software releases.

Yet again, nintendo seems to be rehashing it's old games. There is no way they can justify the price.  It is just way to expensive and the games aren't just the same value as GBA games now. 20US 30 CDN is way too much for these games.

I completely agree that they should be bundle together somehow to justify the price.  I would gladly pay that price for 5 games, cause that would seem worth it.  But geez, what a rip off.

This is kind of cool but, like you all said, overpriced.  $20 for The Legend of Zelda?  For $20 I can get a Nintendo Power subscription, The Legned of Zelda, and THREE other Zelda games.  Sure it's not portable but that's not as big of an issue to me.  If you really want these games portable I believe all of the first party titles are available in Animal Crossing.  Use the money you would use to buy these games to buy a Gameshark that will unlock all of these games for you that you can then load onto the GBA.  Realistically these have to be made into bundles if they're released in North America.

At least now that Super Mario Bros has been ported to the GBA Nintendo has run out of Mario ports and thus has to make a new Mario game for once.

Actually, I doubt that these are ports, but instead are probably emulated versions (which would explain why they're so cheap). They have yet to do an actual GBA port of SMB1 (plus they also have the original Game Boy titles to raid, too).

Hm, I saw a NES-to-GBA adapter once... Wonder what became of that...

Isn't it ironic that old Hudson NES games get re-released by Nintendo while Hudson themselves are remaking the games for the Gamecube? Star Soldier, Lode Runner,Genjin and Adventure Island are already remade. I wonder how many others will follow...

Ice Climbers will be worth 20 bucks if they freaking support multiplayer with one cart.  That sure as hell is possible and thats what I miss from my E-Reader Cards.

Call me a optmistic, but... first off I will agree that for $20 that would be crazy (if it had Super Dodge Ball, however, I would be all over it). However, let's assume it's released in the US, these carts would most likely be sold for very cheap used. Personally, it would be hard for me to pass up a $7 used copy of this.

Anyway, as others have stated, this cart should have WAY more games on it. If they would have thrown in Super Dodge Ball, Punch Out, River City Ransom, Fire Emblem (translated), Fire Emblem Gaiden (translated), Famicom Wars (translated) and the NES Tetris (simply beacuse I would be to lazy to dig out the GB version), then that would have been a awesome package, and more than merit a purchase.

hmm...coolness. Its a cool idea but most definitely wont sell for 20 bucks a pop. I mean, I know ill buy it, but nobody else will. I dunno, i have a strong feeling that this is going to change. They will either be in groups like you said, or a true collectors feature for each one like commentary and official art and stuff ala Sonic Mega Collection. I must say though, i'm glad this didnt turn out to be another e-reader fiasco. ;P

I love that Fire Emblem idea.  Somehow Nintendo has to make the other Fire Emblem games available to us.  I would prefer a collection for the Cube but GBA ports are okay too.

NES Tetris is a good idea too but I don't think Nintendo has the rights to that game anymore.

Hmm, I got 4 Zelda games on one disk for $20 so I really don't see myself spending another $20 to get just The Legend of Zelda on the GBA. It would be cool to be able to play The Legend of Zelda anywhere though  but these things are overpriced period. Like everyone else is saying they should have bundled like 3 carts together and then sold them for $20. Hell, they could have even put all of these games on one cart and charged $20 for it.

Perhaps, Bloodworth, perhaps.  But if you get a chance (chances are you have a rulebreaker already), you should really check one out.  Nothing beats 98 in 1!
