Yeah because Europe doesnt exist. PS2 is like 55 million worldwide, and 20 million are from the US. 35 million isnt zilch.

PS2 is number one worldwide with around 55 million (give or take a few million), GameCube should be second with around 12 million, Xbox would be last with something between 10 and 12 million. When i can be bothered, i will look up exact figures.

sure would! i mean let's ignore all of japan and the combined PAL market's sales, ignore the fact that 90% of good game developers/publishers reside in japan, also we should probably ignore the fact that the japanese have pretty much invented gaming as we know it

but hay, USA IS BETTAH

let me get this straight now:::
Hardware Sales in North America 2003
1 GameBoy Advance Nintendo 17,633,000
2 PlayStation 2 Sony 20,288,000
3 GameCube Nintendo 5,702,000
4 Xbox Microsoft 6,669,000

japanese sales for 2003
1. PlayStation 2- 2,994,000
2. Gameboy Advance SP- 2,433,000
3. Gameboy Advance- 1,180,000
4. Gamecube- 1,040,000
5. Xbox- 97,000
------------------------------------------------------------------------
so in north america, ps2 outsold japan by 17,294,000
gba outsold japan by 14,020,000
GC outsold japan by 4,662,000
XB outsold japan by 6,572,000

so ps2 outsold japan by about 5 times as many consoles
and you can see the fold on the other systems too

japan is the largest gaming community outside north america,
so do you see what i mean now?

Joeamis:  Nope, that's not exactly correct, although you couldn't help but draw that conclusion from the information presented.  The North American sales are the total installed base since the introduction of the systems.  The Japanese sales are only for 2003.  I can't give exact figures, but each system has sold at least these many systems since their introductions in Japan:

Playstation 2 -- 12 million
Nintendo Gamecube -- 2.5 million
Microsoft XBox -- 300,000

Those numbers are the absolute minimum, as they leave out sales for the second half of 2002.

What about the other foreign countries like Taiwan, China, and Korea? They have some fairly large gaming crowds there too.

They also have HUGE piracy problems- I don't think any major console has even been released in those regions up until recently, with the PS2.

Also, Taiwan is technically not its own country yet, since China still lays claim to its land. Even if it was, I don't think it could be considered a large gaming market in of itself, not unless it were lumped in with China as I assume it normally is.

Technically you're correct.  However, when I go to Taiwan, I say "Taiwan" not China.  I meant it more of a regional thing.  The PS2 was available in Taiwan a few months after it was released in Japan.  How do I know? Because I was there when it happened.  They have all the major consoles.  In fact they probably get it sooner than the US because importing is much easier.  As for the piracy issue in Taiwan in particular, they have been cracking down on that for several years now.  People are really scared now when they try to sell you that stuff.  They have spotters all over the place who radio in if they see cops come.  As for China, can't really say about games.  I'll just say i was able to buy pirated CDs/movies much easier in China than Taiwan.

Well, I know for a fact that piracy is rampant in China and Korea especially, making it difficult for any major consoles to get a widespread release.

now im confused about the numbers, but im pretty sure my first numbers are right.

Hardware Sales in North America
(For the month of November 2003)
Rank System Manufacturer Units Sold Total Sold
1 GameBoy Advance Nintendo 1,323,000 17,633,000
2 PlayStation 2 Sony 849,000 20,288,000
3 GameCube Nintendo 754,000 5,702,000
4 Xbox Microsoft 491,000 6,669,000

the first number is sales for november for 2003, and the 2nd number is for the total sales since launch. just think about it...there is no way the cube sold nearly 6 million this year in just north america.....or has it....dang. well anyways i dont think it has. whatever someone will sort it out.

anyways pirating is also horrible in india...i heard that is one of the worst places because they dont acknowledge any international copyright laws.

OT: I work with this guy from Turkey, and he always catches me at Nintendo sites and starts trying to explain to me why its OK for the Turkish to pirate games and not for Americans. Basically he says our economy is so big we can afford to pay, but they're to poor so it's perfectly fine for them to bootleg games, movies and cds. I tried to tell him that that just forces us to pay even more for stuff. I'm not sure if that's true or not but if it is, it pisses me off. Anyways, it's very strange, but in the end, he refuses to pay more than 5 dollars for a game.

In China or India competition with the pirates actually brought the prices down a lot. The record industry is facing this problem as well. As long as there is no competition in terms of pricing, prices will remain high. But rising prices combined with sinking quality makes many people question the value they get for their money. The record industry was forced to lower prices in order to make people buy more originals, maybe the games industry will be as well.
