PGC, what the heck is up with the ads?
« on: January 08, 2004, 06:47:57 AM »
Ok what the heck is PGC up to?  Have they sunk this low?

Everytime I come to your page, or go to other pages, stupid adds, like this half clothed chick comes up every time, and it says "do you want to meet this slut?" (well not the slut part).  And they track your IP address to find out where you live, so they say are you single in <insert location>

And even on the forums, there is one add at the top and one add on the side, usually of the stupid match.com.  What the hell?  What is this crap. Pretty soon this website will start having porn.  What the hell is wrong with you guys?  Sure you need the money, but geez.

I BET you are using Internet Explorer and have never used Spybot S&D? I also bet you have visited a semi-legal site or installed a P2P program like Kazaa?
If any of the above is true, you have Spyware on your computer. That's like a virus but virus scanners aren't allowed to remove it for legal reasons. Spybot is the best scanner against this stuff (it's free, BTW). If you have AdAware, use Spybot anyway, it finds more stuff than AdAware.
Also, I suggest using anything but Internet Explorer. IE is the worst browser on earth (except for Netscape 4). It has holes so big a virus/spyware program can be installed if you just look at a website (or email, if you're using Outlook Express as well). A virus could easily be injected into your computer and be used top make your system send spam to other people, harvest contact data, etc. Valve had such an intrusion and you likely know the result.

I swear, Johnny or Bloodworth or Ty or someone needs to just delete any thread about ads, or at least make an official topic- if I hear one more lazy person bitching about pop-ups or banners, I'm gonna go crazy.

I see the dating site ads on Hotmail, and practically everywhere. They don't seem that terrible to me...unless of course you have those "special" Spyware-served ads they mentioned.

Ok, well um, this thread kinda went a complete opposite way than I thought but whatever.  I have no "special" ads.  They are the plain old adds that PGC has anyways.

And as far spyware programs, if you don't want them don't download programs like kazaa etc.  Which I don't, and as far as viruses, just get Norton Antivirus.  I have never had a virus because it will stop it before it has fully downloaded onto the comp and continuous monitors new files being put on the hard drive.  But it is a major systems hog, oh well just get a fast comp.

Spyware is not limited only to file sharing programs like Kazaa- if you're using Explorer, you probably have an inordinate amount of spyware on your computer right now.

I can't see how our ads are any more numerous or intrusive that what you'll find on sites like Yahoo, GameSpot, or IGN.  They certainly aren't pornographic and never will be.

And if you don't think you have any spyware/adware on your PC, think again.  I run AdAware every single day and it still finds things.  So think how much has accumulated on your PC over the months and years, if you've never cleaned it up.  Get one of these free programs, it will make your computer run better, and you'll see fewer ads period.  Not to mention that you'll be protecting your privacy much better than before.

I use two spyware removal programs "Spybot - Search & Destroy" as previously mentioned, and Ad-aware(free version).

EDIT: Ooops they're both previously mentioned.

I'm sorry, what?  We simply don't have the luxury of picking our ads by hand -- most sites don't.

In any case, your comments are terribly insulting to the thousands of honest people giving up their own lives and comforts to protect our countries.  I'm not about to get into some debate with you, so just drop it right here.

Why is any ad promoting the Army suddenly propaganda? It really pisses me off how the military can't advertise for new people without being attacked. Whatever.

The army is games relevant. After all, they made a really popular online FPS for advertising.

Ok well if you dont get the lucury of choosing ads then I guess it's allright.
Another thing I'm wondering is why UGO is still running ads that are years old and now irrelevant, but that's soemthing we shoudl take up with them.

I've seen that ad. A dating ad from Match.com. There's also another one for Classmates.com, where supposedly you can look up your old high-school buddies.

They appear to just check your IP address to see where you live. They seem harmless, except that AdAware doesn't seem to like the cookies that they give you (yes, I was bored).

I swear, Johnny or Bloodworth or Ty or someone needs to just delete any thread about ads, or at least make an official topic- if I hear one more lazy person bitching about pop-ups or banners, I'm gonna go crazy.

Or just put a line on the top of the main page saying:

"PGC assumes that all visitors to this site are running pop-up blockers, and recommends them to any people that happen to not be using them, so although we do try to get good ads for this site, we can't be held responsible for anything that may happen to you or your computer because of our ads. Besides, you're the one visiting our site, so stop yer bitchin."

By the way, you do know that you don't have to read every thread on the boards, right?

Spybot Search & Destroy is great.  Internet Explorer is not.  Yay.  On MY PC I have Mozilla Firebird (which I will update ASAP) and have spybot.  On THIS PC we have IE and no spybot.  There's no question that this PC has a TON of spyware on it, but my parents don't seem to care.

I find it hilarious when people complain about the ads, but then make no effort to prevent them.  I also find it hilarious when I see Xbox ads on PGC, but that's just me. =P

I'm out.

when i click on links or the back button while browsing pgc, occationally a download box will pop up with the following information:

File:  Network=ugo&size=300x250&adtype...
Server:  mediamgr.ugo.com
Type:  text/plain
Opens with:  Network=ugo&size=300x25...

this just started today, but it's happened 3 times in the past 20 minutes.  i'm assuming it some ad (that i know you don't have any control over) but is there anything i can do to stop this from happening?

EDIT:  make that 4 times.  it prompted me to download the file again when i posted the message.
