despite critical acclaim, i think ubisoft is having problems moving both prince of persia and beyond good & evil.  it may be because both are pretty short by today's standards (10-15 hours each).  they're already bundling prince of persia with splinter cell for $50, and lots of places have dropped the price of beyond good & evil down to $20 (or lower).  it's quite sad, actually, because both games are great.

Everyone seems to dodge this issue: what kind of replay value does PoP have?

little.  there are a few unlockables, but not much.  and once you know the puzzles, they're not too hard to beat.  the fighting system isn't very complicated, so it won't keep you coming back once you beat the game.

Yeah, though Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil are both great games, they really have no replay value to speak of.  They're more worth playing for the technical brilliance and great style than anything else.  They're also very short (nearly down to shooter standards), so that doesn't help as well.  I'd recommend getting BG&E because of the low price, and PoP either used or when prices start going down.  They're good, but the lack of replay value and length really hurts these titles.

You haven't?  That means you probably haven't been reading IGN which is.... good.

Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure with similar "run around hit things and look for clues" gameplay mechanics to the Zelda series.  It was designed by the creator of Rayman.  It has a rather nice art style.  It features a young woman and a pig-man trying to uncover the darker truth about the government of their homeland.  The pig-man seems more useful than Tricky in StarFox Adventures.

I haven't played either game though I do want to rent them.  Unfortunatley none of the stores in my areas have them available to rent.  The supposed lack of replay value and short length means I'll probably never buy them.  I can deal with one of those flaws but with both you get a "Luigi's Mansion": fun game that can be completed 100% in a weekend.

If Beyond Good & Evil is selling poorly I think it's pretty easy to see why.  It's a completely brand new property and I haven't seen even one ad for it on TV.  Why would the average person take a chance on a game they've never heard of?  It just doesn't happen and if BG&E is a flop that is the reason.

As for POP well if it's not selling well I can't find a good reason why unless everyone is aware of it's short length.  Sure POP isn't a really well known name but I did see advertisments and they were pretty good.  Maybe people are scared off by the crappy last attempt to recreate the Prince of Persia.

If the Cube versions sell poor though I wouldn't be surprised.  They both came out later for Nintendo's console ensuring that multiple console owners would buy the PS2 or Xbox version first.

It's possible that by releasing these games on every platform available UbiSoft has spread themselves too thin.  An exclusive title may have received more hype.

Well I have PoP, and it's very fun the first time through. Even though there's no incentive for a second run (unfortunately) you can still play it multiple times, which is what I'm doing. I also got BG&E but I'm not starting that until after finals .

i loved prince of persia- the game is very very good- the fighting is fun and looks great- but i just love the puzzles- it reminded me a lot like ico for the ps2- which is one of the better games on that system

BG&E is officially $20 at many retailers.  I've got mine ordered, so I'll find out what the game's really like.

Frankly, I'd like PooP to drop to $20 as well.

uh wait...

Both titles were cancelled for GC and XBox in Europe. I think there was a limited exclusivity due to Sony bribery and after they didnt sell Ubi determined they weren't worth releasing on GC/Box.

if pop has a story as good as i hear then it sounds worth the buy to me.

ever own a good book you read again and again?

i have a few games that  have no real reason to play twice besides that they are enjoyable, story and gameplay.  for example, mario sunshine, zelda, metriod prime, and so on.

I dont understand why everyone bitches so much about a game being only 10 - 15 hours long. WTF do you expect for $50.

A freaking movie costs 10 bucks and most are only 90 mins.

At 12 hours of game play a video games gives you one of the best entertainment to cost ratios out there, when you look at the big name types of entertainment.  I barely have time to play anymore and a nice game I can play in a weekend is well worth it to me. I think both of these games are wonderful and the perfect length.

Thanks. I got that feeling. Sounds like a great rental anyway.

Edit: I don't follow those other 'big' mediums. I read books, I watch educational TV, and play video games. My value standards are higher, I guess.

Compared to other forms of entertainment it's a pretty good deal but compared to other games it's a rip-off.  I think that's what most people complain about.  If $50 gets me a game that lasts 30 hours I shouldn't pay the same for a title that's only 10 hours.  Plus if you can completely beat a game in a rental period why pay $50 when you can pay $10 to rent it for a week?

Saying Prince of persia has no replay value is pretty rediculous..it has the same replay value as old greats like classic mario games.
Its really linear and its easy to remember what you did there before..but i like playing it over. People said the same thing about Eternal Darkness and man i have replayed that game alot. Also, i never heard PoP had bad sales...just BG&E...i bet PoP is causing a sales vacuum.

Can platforming objectives/general traveling in PoP be completed in various ways like in SMS/Mario64?  Or is it more strict and straightforward?

well its really straight forward..i have found some dangerous shortcuts though...like in the library i keep forgetting how to get down at a certain point so i just jump from a latter to a swinging flag below....if you do it wrong youll fall to your death...anyways yeah theres prolly lots of places like this..i havent mario 64ified the game yet...

Dunno about reports, but at 3 Targets that I went to they are either sold out or have 1-2 copies left. Suprisingly, or maybe not so, LOTR: ROTK has like a whole stack. I am from the old-school "Double Dragon" generation of kids, and I am seriously digging POP. Maybe you more sosphisticated gamers are right that the mechanics of the game will wear off, but wow, is it cool to me.

What an overrated game.

Horrible fighting: Jump over, hit, repeat. Can't jump over? Bounce off a wall, hit, repeat. Can't do either? Just slash. Get hit? Rewind time. Surrounded? Jump around like a monkey trying to get away until you get hit, then rewind time. Princess with you? Get ready to utter plenty of profanities as the bitch does everything she can to hit you and get killed as far away from you as possible.

Horrible linearity: Aside from glitches you can exploit, there's only one way to get to places.

Horrible replay value: Zero.

Horrible difficulty: Too easy except for the fights which are just a pain in the butt. Like getting to a place wasn't easy enough, they give you visions regularly which basically tell you "do this". What kind of difficulty is that? And then, to top it all off, you can rewind time, there's a save point every 10 minutes and there's a healing pool near almost every save point. Gee thanks... wouldn't want to die once or anything. And people complained that Zelda was too easy...

Horrible "bosses": Do I really need to explain this? Maybe I'd forgive the game if even the end boss wasn't weaksauce and highly disappointing.

I don't see why people like this game. It's horrible. Easily the biggest disappointment of last year... gives even Star Fox a run for its money.
