Gamecube has cracks/damages on it?
« on: December 20, 2003, 04:27:49 PM »
I bought my gamecube new about 3 weeks ago, one thing I noticed (actually when I first opened it) is that there are small cracks that run in the plastic.  There is one that goes from the light on the top down to the edge.  As well as small cracks that run from the buttons (power, open, reset) to the edges on top of the console.

EXAMPLE PIC

You can see in the pic where the cracks are, the crack by the power button is slightly smaller.  But the cracks really aren't that big or noticable (especially since its a black gamecube) but that almost exactley how they look as far as location and shape.

The Gamecube itself works fine, no problems whatsoever.  I was just curious if anyone else has had such a problem?  I assume its either from bad packaging, mishandling, or poor quality plastic.

Thanks.

Is that your machine? If so, return it dude. I have 4 buddies that just picked up a Cube (lucky bastards all got platinum) and none of them look like that. Also, mine doesn't look like that either....and mine was bought on launch day! So it's had a few years of controllers whiped at it

my friend had a similar problem with his, it actually had a piece that cracked off a corner and it looked like a rat had chewed on it, he bought it last august new.

return your gamecube, someone probably dropped it from a big height or something heavy fell on it during its shipment process on its way to you through cold weather.

Actually i don't think they are cracks at all, rather funkiness in the paint...my old black one had them and it didn't bother me..its not like they are actual visible unless you are staring at it from a foot away.  Don't return it, chances are your new one will have the same thing and you will be wasting your time, and nintendo's money.

No, its not my cube, its just the only pic I could find on the net of the top of a gamecube.  And that must be some older pre release version or something becuase the top lid has that little window in it.  Plus mine is black.

I just wanted to show you where the cracks are on the console.

As far as them even being cracks, I'm not sure.  They sure look like cracks from close up, but rubbing them with my finger I cant really feel much, its all pretty smooth.

I dont think I'm going to return the gamecube, since its working fine to my knowledge (so far).  Thanks for the input though, and if anyone else has seen anything like this before, please let me know.

This was complained about a lot during launch,  something about the manufacturing process I think it was?  Anyway, return it if it really bothers you.   Mine is smooth as anything, and so are most of the ones I see, if that helps you any.

I believe that the fissures are caused by the injection molding process, where they plastic is injected with the paint. This causes a lot of stress on the plastic, and hence the crack-like appearance. This seems to be pretty standard with most Cubes.

Holy... i just looked really closely at my Indigo GameCube and saw it had wierd lines in the exact same places that you marked on that picture. They are not cracks, the lines on mine aren't black they are just a tiny bit darker than the rest of my GC.

I never noticed it until now, and i bought my Cube at launch

No coincidence. swimguy is correct. It's from the molding process during the system's production. They all have them, you just have to look closely enough. You'll find those lines on the controller as well.
"wow."
