They're REALLY annoying.
And it's been getting worse lately.
I had one Pop-Up from here changing my "home page" with out my knowledge,
and it put me in Pop-Up HELL!

Is this the sorta thing that the people at Planetgamecube want to do to their Fans?
Don't the people at PG review the POP-UPS that they make us endure?

Don't think I'll be visiting www.planetgamecube.com for a LONG time.

I only see it getting worse.

use a pop up blocker, I havent seen a pop up in months

i use Norton Internet Security, and haven't seen a pop-up ad since i started using it. occassionally i still see the black ad before it goes to the PGC site, but it usually only lasts a second becasue NIS blocks the ad from loading on that page. all i see is the white writing.

Be sure you have AdAware installed and use it on a regular basis to clean your systems. Most of the time that people start complaining about increases in pop ups, it's because they have spy ware programs hidden in their systems.

Instead of AdAware I suggest Spybot Search & Destroy. It recognizes a lot more trojans and can perform a lot more operations to secure your computer.
Also, I suggest using an alternate browser like Opera or Firebird. I'm using Opera's popup blocking combined with Spybot's Ad-server blocking and I rarely ever see an ad (okay, I have disabled audio and plugins, as well). That doesn't change much for me, I don't click on ads anyway (I'm afraid they might damage my system).

Been using SpyBot for about a month now.
And I ran SpyBot 2 days ago, so I shouldn't have any SpyWare.
Unless the program is complete GARBAGE.

I browsed around without the pop-up killer for a while, and I didn't notice anything overbearing or unreasonable. The ads seem less intrusive now actually. Sorry, I'm not sure why you're having difficulties.

I never seem to have pop-ups, ever, even though I'm pretty sure that I no longer have a pop-up blocker.

I have a google search bar that stops pop-ups, but it's not activated. Weird.
Anyhoo, they need that stuff for revenue, so I'd suggest trying to just find a better pop-up stopping program.

you know... I think I have done pretty good trying not to see this thread for so long.

BUT USE A BETTER BROWSER!!!!!

You might think me a crackhead, but use this browser and you might be VERY surprised. Don't reply to me saying that IE does the job just fine until you at least try it. It's better than IE in every way, and it's faster. And you know what? I haven't seen an unrequested popup since I have started using it.

Now, I don't have Mozilla, but it's not because I don't want it, because I do. I agree with GN here, Mozilla is prolly the way to go.

Yes, I know. But I saw this thread when it was new while I was sneaking onto the forums at work. (They actually log all our usage, and make us sign a form to get internet access, so it's not really sneaking per say... And I use FIREBIRD at work, contrary to our computer usage policy. HAH!) I think I did good for being able to keep my mouth shut for almost 16 hours.

That reminds me, Ninja- how might I go about importing my Opera bookmarks to Firebird? All I see is an option for importing Explorer bookmarks, and the regular import feature won't accept the Opera file.

There's a section in the FAQ for importing Opera bookmarks. Since Opera is actually a really strange browser, you need a seperate program to import Opera bookmarks.

And Bill, good job. That's one more down, about 70 million to go.

Grey, I've been using firebird quite a bit lately...but it seems like about once a week I get a complete lock up in the program, and when i reload all of my bookmarks and presets are gone...any idea whats going on there?

I was actually thinking of starting one of these threads myself.

It was about three or four days ago. I hit PGC and saw a pop-up starting to launch, and suddenly it expanded to cover my entire monitor, including the taskbar, and left no option to close it.

It said something to the effect of "If you're capable of seeing this message, and it's covering your taskbar, then odds are you have spyware on your system. Please click on this link to download and install our anti-spyware programs." I'm not that stupid, so I just nuked Internet Explorer entirely with a quick control-alt-delete.

When I opened IE again later in the day, that same stupid pop-up got in my face. I control-alt-deleted just the pop-up, and saw that my home page had been changed. This website looked almost the same, but it said something to the effect of "If you're tired of people hijacking your homepage, then you probably have spyware on your system. Please click on this link to download and install our anti-spyware programs."

I changed my homepage back to normal, and for the heck of it I ran Lavasoft AdAware (which I already had installed, and use on occasion), and performed a full Norton virus-scan. I got the clean bills of health that I always get.

I'm guessing that one of your advertisers is (or was, or was hacked into) using some simple internet parlour tricks to try and scare PGC users into thinking they need whatever new software these guys are selling. I don't think it has anything to do with spyware.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a more secure internet browser, but I've never seen the need for one, as I have pretty good judgement (usually), and don't frequent the kind of sites that make this sort of thing a problem. This one harmlessly annoying incedent actually puts PGC slightly ahead of anywhere else I go on the "problem meter". And I have some respect for the advertisers who keep sites like PGC alive, so I don't really want to turn on a pop-up blocker. And PGC actually has the best, most interesting advertisements (since they're almost all videogame-related) of all the sites I know of.

Anyways, I'm not sure if this is still a problem, since I just hopped straight into the forums today without hitting the main site, nor do I know how to fix it (have a talk with whoever gets you your ads, I guess?), but I figured I should let you know that it's happened to more than one person.

PGC gets the advertiser's money whether you click the ad or not, and judging from your dislike for pop-ups, I'm guessing you don't click them anyway, and since you wouldn't click them regardless of whether they popped up or not, it doesn't matter if you use a pop-up blocker.

Basically I'll say the same thing to people complaining about ads as I've said to everyone else- get a pop-up blocker or stop whining. I have no respect for people that complain about things they are perfectly capable of fixing.

Ruby: Just because AdAware finds nothing that doesn't mean you're clean. Spybot (link a few posts up) finds a lot more than AdAware.

Better yet, get both, just to be safe. That's what I've done.
