IGN and GameSpy Announce Merger Agreement

two not-so-hot gaming websites merge to form one super not-so-hot gaming website.

while i typically enjoy gamespy's reviews, its editorials and features are rather poor, and ign leaves a bad taste in my mouth in general.  if ign wasn't one of the best places to find breaking news, (if there is such a thing in the videogame world) i would probably avoid the site all together.

now i can probably count on gamespy's reviews going down the toilets.  anyone know any sites that have good reviews in a timely fashion besides gamespot?

Yeah, I was kind of wondering how this would effect things. Probably not for the good.

Since I read neither... I really don't care.    I mean, it's not like IGN or GameSpy make games.  They just report about them.  Badly.  The only thing about this that could concern me at all is Fileplanet, which I actually do use at times.

The main reason I go to IGN is for the pics and vids and the occasional exclusive.

Actually, I do have something interesting to add.  ZDNet WAS going to buy GameSpy (for the bizarre sum of 60 million bux) , but that deal fell through and this was the next best thing, apparently.

Ahahahahaha somebody was going to pay 60 million for gamespy, absolutely hilarious

A merger that basically means absolutely nothing to anyone who reads either GameSpy or IGN... it seems like a very productive merger.  Personally I rarely go to any game site outside of PGC and Penny Arcade (great new comic btw), so it doesn't concern me... it just seems humorous.

"now i can probably count on gamespy's reviews going down the toilets."

Too late.  They already switched to a stupid five star system (probably because the old scoring was too similar to IGN's) so now every game either gets a perfect score or a crappy score that totally f*cks up the average at gamerankings.com which kind of blows since that's the best site to look for reviews.

Not that IGN Xbox's "every game gets a 9 or higher" didn't already mess up the averages but since I don't have an Xbox that doesn't really concern me.

Love the Penny Arcade comic.  Are those two guys supposed to look like Planeteers or am I just overinfacuated with obscure references?

Captain Planet was great!

I wish they would show re runs here. And I also liked the NES game.

And I agree with PA, never really liked either IGN, and I visited Gamespy like once a month tops.

The thing I do like about Gamespy is that they host hundreds of really good fansites for various video games. Whenever I'm looking for a good fansite of game x chances are theres a good one being hosted by Gamespy.

I'm not too fond of either site, but I do use GameSpy for File Planet as well as GameSpy Arcade once in a while to play Halo online. Hopefully those two services remain in-tact.
