Transformers Armada - Comin To The Cube??
« on: November 30, 2003, 11:54:52 AM »
I am now officially really excited about this game.  It's got beautiful graphics, and what seems to be a decent story.  You can play as Optimus Prime even!!!  It's gonna have all the classic Transformers you could ever want to see.  Heck, even Unicron will be in it.  (Remember him from the movie?  He was the planet-sized guy, but they said there will be another version of him in the game.)  I haven't seen any animations of the Transformations but I've heard that it looks good.  If the developers do everything the way it should be, then this could easily be a game of the year candidate.
The thing I wanna know is, has anyone heard anything about it being on any other systems?  I had heard that it was a PS2 exclusive, but a game that already has such an established fanbase should be available on each system.
I've gotta say what I've gotta say, and then I swear I'll go away, but I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise.

Nope, it's still exclusive to the PlayStation 2. Hopefully they'll port it over after its release.
But at the moment, the closest you'll get to a Transformers game on GameCube is Hudson's upcoming fighter with Optimus Prime in it.

Transformers are on the low end of the stick, imo, when it comes to mecha stuff...Custom Robo looks great, and I may even give Gundam a try...

I sent an e-mail to Atari a few months ago regarding the Transformers Armada game. In their reply they said that the game would be released on the PS2 and they did not have plans to release it on the other systems, but if it sold well, they would consider it.

OT: I saw you can buy Beast Machines Season 1 on DVD now. I fell in love with that show right at its end. It had some really cool stuff later on in its life with lots of references to the old school Transformers. It looked horrible by modern standards, but it was addictive, like just about every other cartoon ever made.

You know, I've never seen the new Transformers Armada TV show.  Is that the anime one?  If it is, I can see why you say it ruined the Transformers.  I REFUSE to watch that show.  I fell in love with the original Transformers Saturday morning cartoon.  Then Beast Wars came along, and though it was different, it was cool.  (It was kinda cheap though; Optimus Prime became Optimus Primal)  There was another that came out that was like a sequel to Beast Wars; what was it called?  Beast Machines, I think?  But thankfully, Transformers Armada the game doesn't seem related to the show with the same name.  I guess it supposed to be a prequel to the original show.

eh? in what way?

Transformers was AMERICAN!! The idea of the series came from Japan with various toys that could transform into other object, hence the name
Transformers!

But the animation originated in U.S. hehe, G1 and G2, the Japanese took the idea and ran with it after G2

Did you even watch the friggin' show? If you did, you'd know that Primal is a DESCENDANT of the original Optimus Prime. They're 2 different characters. And from what I heard, Armada sucks like hell. Actually, both Armada and Energon sucked like hell.

Yep. "Optimus Primal" chose his name in honor of the legendary Autobot leader "Optimus Prime".

I tried watching "Armada" when it first premiered on the Cartoon Network. Let's just say that I'm glad that I own all 5 boxsets of the Original series that Rhino released a few years ago. Armada took way too many liberties with the mythology and it was almost as awful as the FoxKids series "Transformers: Robots In Disguise". I haven't bothered to check-out "Energon" as I assume it's pretty much on par with "Robots In Disguise" and "Armada".

Don't forget, Beast Wars and Beast Machines (the shows) are Canadian!

But here in Canada, they supposedly don't like the word "Wars" in animated shows.  Therefore, "Beast Wars" became "Beasties", and another one of Mainframe's shows, "War Planets", became "Shadow Raiders".  Yeah, I don't get it either.  Peace-loving Canadians, we are.

Then Mainframe's best show, Reboot (which had purple "Game Cubes", and the first of two direct-to-TV movies was shown on the GameCube's launch day), was apparently getting too violent for ABC (in America) to show on Saturday mornings.  Go figure.

I've been wanting to get the War Planets DVDs. Apparently, Rhino is supposed to be releasing the complete series on DVD this year. If not, I might have to import the single volume (Shadow Raiders) discs from Canada.

Ok well to clear some thinsg up, Transformers did originate as a Japanese toy line, it was taked form TWO major japanese toy lines, Diaclone and Microman. Diaclone is where all the cool cars, planes, and things came from, Microman was where the little deformed mino cars came from. When Hasbro broght it to America, Takara and Hasbro decided to make ita joint venture, basicaly Takara OWNS the rights to EVERYTHING Tf related, anbd then lisceness it to Hasbro on a series to series basis.

The first cartoon, was developed by Marvel and had a comic book tie in. The comic actualy came first though and theres a serious split ammong transformers fans over which is offical cannon. Beast Wars basicaly took story elemnts from both the cartoon and Comic so they really made tings more confusing.

The reason the Transformers Armada game never came to GC and still likely wont, is because Takara don't make games for GC and they control everything Tf related.

G1 was what i grew up on and will always be the best in my mind, BW was pretty good only cuz it had good animationa nd the story tried to fit in with G1 a lot, but there were inconsistancies, like how Starscrams Ghost showed up in BW yet Unicron restored him to life in the G1 cartoon rigth near the end. So he would still be alive when BW took place. Also BW tookplace in the PAST so his ghost still wouldn't be around because he was still alive in that time frame, go figure. Bm was garbage though it took RID to clear thinsg up and get the major fans back and make TFs popular again.

What about that Konami/Hudson/Takara crossover game?

You know, DreamMix TV World Fighters or whatever it's called?  That was on the GameCube in Japan.

Bomberman vs. Solid Snake vs. Optimus Prime and many other franchise characters?  Megatron was in it too.

Yep. "Optimus Primal" chose his name in honor of the legendary Autobot leader "Optimus Prime".

Actually, "Optimus Primal" became his name after his self-image updated to include his animal form. That's why he and his crew had to introduce themselves to each other after they emerged from the ship. They probably don't even really know who they were or what they were like before the change. It's like how when you dream of the past, you see yourself as your current self, not as the you that was present at that time.

But yeah, he's still an entirely different Bot than the original Optimus Prime. In Beast Wars, Megatron (named after Megatron) once reffered to Primal as an "Optimus unit" which suggests that there were a lot more Transformers like them on the Beast Wars-era Cybertron, probably wherever a heroic leader was needed, like Captaining ships and whatnot. But Primal was the only one who got stuck on that planet with Megatron. Which of course, makes Beast Machines all the more pathetic.

It's because YTV and Mainframe are/were really close. YTV supported Mainframe before they were even Mainframe. YTV just "asked" about toning down the "Wars" bit, and Mainframe was happy to oblige.

Both are wrong. The toys are cannon. The cartoons and the comics are seperate continuities which borrow from each other.

Quote

Beast Wars basicaly took story elemnts from both the cartoon and Comic so they really made tings more confusing.

At first they were trying to make it in a "bubble" universe, which could be the sequel to any version, but wasn't specific enough to nail down, but then it became clear enough to be a third contrinuity, borrowing from the other two.

Quote

So he would still be alive when BW took place.

He could've still died again in the supposedly vast span of time between G2 and the Beast Wars era. Plus a second trip to ghost form would've made it very clear that there was something odd about his spark.

Quote

Also BW tookplace in the PAST so his ghost still wouldn't be around because he was still alive in that time frame, go figure.

He was a ghost in the Beast Wars era, and he passed through the transwarp tunnel which took him to prehistoric Earth in the same way the Maximal and Predacon ships did.

well about the takara bit, that came about a few months ago so any games released before they stopped supporting gc are irrelevant.

Same deal with how 2K sports stopped supporting GC and they had plenty of games on it before they decided to stop making them. Of course they are different in that they changed their mind again and are making a new GC game.

Getting back to Tfs, Ruby, that’s YOUR take on what is official cannon. AS far as Hasbro is concerned, the "official cannon" is everything that is Officially licensed, which not only includes Marvel comics/cartoon and Tech Specs, but also included the recent Dream Wave comic/cartoons and tech Specs. As far as they are concerned Transformers is one massive toyline that gets sublines every two to three years.

Some people consider the cartoon cannon, others the comics others the toys. Me I always went with a mix of all three, I took elements form the Tv show, comics and Tech Specs when deciding what story lines to follow. I used to have a massive TF website with huge databases and pictures and all kids of neat stuff, Im a bigger Tf fan than video game fan so I certainly try and keep up with what’s going on in the world of Transformers. not that that means I know more than you but thought I would share that to give bg of where I am coming from.

I personally liked the DV G1 comics but never considered them official cannon since they had to change so much of what came before to fit in with what was going on recently, like making Megatron (G1 Megatron) into a Tank when in G1 he was a gun. And having Grimlock on Cybertron before the crash on earth when he was created on earth after they were revived, things like that that I didn’t take seriously.

Your points about Starscream I have heard before on TF forums, but the flaw with that logic is Starscream never said anything about going through the transwarp. Also he described how he died in the War against Unicron in BW, which was BEFORE Unicron reincarnated him. See Episode Ghost in the Machine Season 3 Transformers original series. they only way to stretch it is if you take the comics approach with the alternate universe theory, which is how they explained Galvatrons existence while Megatron still was alive.

But I love discussion of Tfs and welcome any relevant discussion that doesn’t lead to flame wars or being banned from forums.
