Mario Kart Bonus disc screwing
« on: November 19, 2003, 08:59:48 AM »
First off, I hope this hasn't been discussed to death in the Mario Kart thread, as I avoid that one because I don't want any spoilers...But this is more about the bonus disc than it is about mario kart.... so...

Has anyone else played hell trying to get the disc?  Wal-Mart screwed me over even though the slip said i would get it...their response was "Nintendo must have decided not to do it because we never got them" which I know is total bull crap.  My friend who pre ordered at game craze (that place inside hollywood video) didn't get theirs either.  I just emailed nintendo to see if they can do something for me because that is the entire reason I freaking pre ordered.  I know the demos aren't the greatest on it, but I'm ticked I'm gonna miss out on the fire emblem goodies.

I know one person who pre ordered from eb and now i'm finding out that the disc is contained in the same case as mario kart, which means more than ever that I am probably screwed...  argh..

So, did anyone else have these issues?

We got in the regular Mario Kart discs yesterday, but the ones with the Bonus Discs didn't come in until today. The ones with the disc included with have a notice on the bottom right corner of the box. You pre-ordered it using the pre-order slip and they scanned the bar code, Nintendo would have a record of it and would have (and probably did) ship it off to them, probably separately to make sure that they weren't stocked on the shelf with the regular versions.
I would go back to that Wal-Mart and see if they did get those in today, in which case, I would ask for an exchange.
(In my experience, be polite about it, as the person working there probably has no clue about it, and if you're nice they'll be more inclined to help you)

They included it in the case?  Sh!t.  Now I have no chance in hell of getting this.  I asked my parents to get me Mario Kart for my birthday (in December) or Christmas with specific instructions to pre-order and get the disc.  If it comes in the case and my mom either forgets about it or the clerks at EB lie and say it doesn't come with one or whatever I'm screwed.  I should have just bought this game myself.

Since the bonus disc comes in the case I imagine this is going to become quite the collector's item.  This is for all intents and purposes a "limited edition" version of Mario Kart.

i've said this before, but the way nintendo handles demo discs is a joke. they obviously didnt want this disc getting in the hands of anyone who hasnt bought mario kart if they packaged it in with the game.

Nintendo probably didn't want people to do something like pay $5 to preorder then get the disk and never go back to get the game. I think some people did that with Zelda.

"i've said this before, but the way nintendo handles demo discs is a joke."

Agreed.  They've released two demo discs so far and they're both only available to certain small groups in the Gamecube userbase.  The first one was for new Cube purchasers and it was hell to get one if you already owned a Cube.  The second one is even more limiting because you have to pre-order ONE SPECIFIC game in order to get it.  These things should be available to everyone.  One of the advantages of having demo discs is that you expose new games to people who may not have played it on their own.  Therefore limiting the release of these discs is moronic.  Sony seems to know how to do demo discs right so Nintendo should just do what they do.

"now having already registerred the other copy of mario kart, i find myself with an extra pin number"

I wonder if you can get the disc for registered two different copies of the same game.

If you want to get extra pin numbers do what this guy on the Penny Arcade forum did.  He went around to local rental places and asked if he could have the inserts for the games.  The rental stores usually remove the Nintendo Power subscription ad and all the other inserts except the manual.  That means they also remove the pin number.  This guy asked a few clerks that just handed it to him and even searched in a few garbage cans.  He has like ten pins or something.

I went to Gamestop tuesday morning and got MK: DD and the bonus disk without even pre-ordering.  I asked the clerk if there was anyway I could get the disk even though I didn't pre-order, and he said I was gonna get it anyway because it came in the case and that was ALL they had for the first shippment.  So I got lucky because they didn't have any of the regular MK cases yet.  Oh happy day!

I preordered at Best Buy... got home and realized it didn't say anything about Bonus Disc Inside! So I went back.. and was told they were out of them! AHH! So why did I preorder? HOWEVER, just down the block was a K-Mart and I figureed what the heck, who goes to K-Mart for games... and sure enough, they had bunch of MKDD with bonus disc packages. Now I just have to get my 5 bucks back from BB... Try other stores (like NOW) and see if they have them in.

I don't think Nintendo's demo disc system is that bad. Well that one with SC2 and Viewtiful Joe was a joke since ONLY new GC buyers got it, unless you paid 10 bucks at TRU or something. But TWW and MKDD ones I think are nice bonus for those people. Same for the Zelda collectors set.

Remember, no one else gives these out for free! Anyone can get the Xbox ones, but yiou have to pay for them....

Sell the extra number to a friend I guess.  You could try to sell it on Ebay but I imagine Nintendo would crack down on it.  You could also try making another MyNintendo account and then if you end up getting two more of the participating games you could get two disks.  Unless they only allow one per address.  Then you might be screwed.

I'll probably just end up giving it to someone as soon as I think someone really needs it.  I'm gonna hang onto it for now though.

Well I attempted that rental store idea I mentioned above.  Sure enough the store had just got Mario Kart in and they still had the pin numbers in them.  Unfortunately the Mario Party 5 copies didn't still have the pin numbers.  Anyway I wrote one of the numbers down and got the hell out of there.  The Cube section is right near the entrance so everyone who entered the store was staring at the noticably nervous young man frantically writing something down.

So I get home and the f*cking number doesn't work!  ARRRRRGH!!  The site says the number is invalid so either I copied it down wrong or someone else already registered it.  F*CK!

Just take the insert outright. This is what I told people to do on the N-Philes forum and what I did. Hit up your local Blockbuster, if they are anything like mine just snatch the insert out and keep moving. If you are approached just say you got the Nintendo Power subscription card or some such. That writing the number down thing is garbage.

Well I have zero experience with shoplifting so sneaking anything out of a store, even if they probably won't care about it, is something I would for sure f*ck up.  And I really like that store so I don't want to get in any trouble.  I was sh!tting bricks just copying the number down so I wouldn't be comfortable with actually sneaking the insert out of the store.

No sneaking involved, just bodly walk in open the case, hell read the instruction booklet for a bit to add validity to your impending petty crime, remove said booklet, do a lap around the store or just buy a soda or someting and be on your way, It's the sneaking that will give you a heart attack. I swear, I told my wife that I was going to go and yammy (my own word for take) that pin, I parked the car walked in, opened the box, rifled through it, found the registration card and was out. My disc should be here in two weeks by the way, let that be your guide.

Considering that I almost missed out on the Ocarina of Time Master Quest bonus disc due to confusion at the store from which I pre-ordered Wind Waker, I know what a mess it can be.  On the bright side, it seems that Nintendo is moving in the right direction with the game registration system (people stealing PIN numbers notwithstanding).  I feel more confident knowing that Nintendo will be shipping the Zelda Collection disc directly to me, with no store involved.

Just so you all know, while i was thinking wal mart screwed me i sent an email to nintendo about it.  They then replied with a number i could call to try and straighten things out and get the disc.  I don't have to worry about it anymore because wal mart took care of me, but if anyone else is having problems, you may want to try it.

You could only get the Mario Kart bonus disc if you preordered Mario Kart...However, some people were able to get it without preordering at certain places like Electronics Boutique...
