Mario Kart strategy & help thread

I'll start by posing this question; what are the odds on getting each character-specific item? Especially Daisy's insanely powerful one...

The timing for the boost start is within a few milliseconds of when the race actually starts.

You can get a boost when Lakitu drops you - just hit A exactly as your cart hits the ground.

yeah, i've done the boost from lakitu a couple of times by accident, it's the same power as a drift boost, on the other hand i can never get the boost off the line to work :\ I THINK MY GAMECUBE IS BROKUN OR SUMFIN!

What trips me up on the start boost is that you have to wait a split second after the light is green...I'm so used to accelerating after the second light turns red from Super Mario Kart...

I haven't noticed that the "mini boost" does anything really. I've run time trials with and without the miniboost and actually get WORSE times with miniboost than without. Most likely this is because when I corner and slide I don't corner as tightly. I dunno. Is there a trick to getting the boost right? I wait till my sparks turn blue then release the trigger, but it doesn't seem to do much. Pretty pathetic actually.

well it's not ment to be like using a mushroom, it's just ment to shoot you forward out of the corner, somewhat like a slingshot effect, if you can get the drifting down properly, your times should increase quite alot, as you keep your speed while drifting + the microboost at the end of it.

I always shave a good second or two when I powerslide, and usually when I do it 2 or 3 times per turn...

I believe the reason Ninty didn't make it as powerful this time around is to narrow the gap between vets that could easily do the powerslide and newbies that just started...

I'm pretty sure you're meant to start sliding for corners way earlier now. Like, 30 yards before a hairpin, so you can take it as tight as possible.

i don't know the exact odds, but i'm pretty sure the more powerful the special item, the less likely you'll get it.

i hardly ever get peach's/daisy's or baby mario's/baby luigi's special items, but i have no problem getting the others characters'.

Yeah, I've noticed. The Bowser and Wario crews are pretty hot because they can keep getting their specials when they're up front.

I'm going to post some MK: DD shortcuts/secrets. If anyone knows any more please post!

Luigi Circuit: -In the beginning, there is a path to the right of the chain chomp with double item boxes at the end. -A bit later there is a small side path to the right that also has double item boxes

Peach Beach: -If you turn left into the pipe instead of right at the first curve, it will rocket you out into a double item box. -Also there is a shorcut in the beach section (on the left side) where you can use it if tide is low. -Near the end, where there is a Pianta statue, turn left around it for double item boxes.

Mushroom Bridge: -Right after the start line there is a small path to the right, which leads to a pipe with a double item box. -When you come out of the first tunnel, there is a hill straight ahead--use a mushroom to get over it. -When turning around the same hill, there is a stone pathon the very left; you go faster on it than on the road. -On the big bridge section, drive up the right side of the bridge for a boost/item box

Daisy Cruise: -When coming out of the main room with the tables, and after you turn right, there will be a hole in the floor on the next turn. Go into it for a double box and boost cannon thing.

Dino Dino Jungle: -When you enter the large area with the wood bridges, turn right immediately for a separate bridge with a boost. -When you enter the next big area (with the water fountains), turn right and use a mushroom to clear the gap to the island.

using a mushroom there is very important, don't even attempt it otherwise, the logs cause your kart to slow down BIG TIME!

if i'm reading that right, you're saying that if a member of the bowser/wario crew is driving and has his special item, he won't lose it if he gets hit?  i've noticed that if you have one of the koopa's special items and you get hit it goes from multiple shells down to just one.

No, what I meant was, they are far more likely to receive their specials when they are in leading places than other characters

The further back you are, the better items you get, (special or not). I've never got a lightning bolt above 6th place.  Never got a star above 4th.  You only get bananas and shells, occasionally a mushroom.

With regards to shortcuts:

Yoshi Island: (whatever, I can't remember what it's called), there is a underground shortcut where yoshi's mane. frill, sail thing is. ( or whatever you want to call it)  After you come out the underpass cave, look for a small grass hill on the very edge of the island.  Ensure you have a nitrous mushroom and activate just as you drive over the ramp. You'll see it. You emerge over that big U-turn.

Mushroom City:  Near the start of the race move over to the right side of the road.  You will see a small pink trail leading between two buildings.

They are the only 2 I can think of for now.

Actually, you can get stars and mushrooms if they are lying on the ground.

What is baby luigi and marios secret item?

And what is daisy and peaches?

baby luigi/mario's item is a giant chain chomp that drags them along as super high speeds, and smacks into any other karts that gets in its way.

daisy and peach have 2 hears that circle around them.  when they get hit by an item, the heart absorbs the blow, and if they don't have an item in their item box they get whatever hit them.

Oh so the babies have the same special as mario and luigi? (I've never seen the baby's special obviously) THat's cool.

I suggest using a light character combo.  I dont like to pair up 2 of the same types of characters though, that way you can get 2 different specials.
I prefer the paratroopa and diddy kong combo.  I use paratrooper at the beginning for his shells, then when I'm in front I have diddy for his giant banana.

I use toad and toadette with their cart. To me, they are the best characters. I love their special. the golden mushroom. I can catch up to anybody using that special.
