Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

What are you talking about ak? That was the most photorealistic polygoniest technology currently available to MAN! If they did that, Mario would jump out of the TV and start eating the mushrooms growing under your couch! THAT'S how real it will be.

I hope this makes all of the fanboys realize Mario Sunshine was not likened to a Mario game's gameplay.  Mario Kart resembles oldschool Mario games more than the present 3d interpretation.

Mario games should be racing to the end of a stage using powerups and multiple paths not an open Zelda esque area of exploration and gathering of useless sprites to complete "missions."

Now people will realize that Nintendo did more than change the games to 3d they changed the gameplay because they thought that a shift in infasis was neccessary to go with the new open range of movement.  When the N64 came out it should have been Zelda that went free roaming 3d (which it did, but only after Mario did) not Mario games.  The game should definately be 3d but the gameplay should be 2d.

Plus everyone ignored me when I posted the following in a topic now found on the Mario board.
In a new interview in GMR Shig is asked about 2d gaming on this gen of consoles. His response is that he can't talk about it. Then he laughs. We all know what that usually means. Then his translater comes in and says he is always trying to get Shig to do a new 2d Mario. Then he laughs.

Want more? In the same issue of GMR there is mention of Nintendo having plans for an all new Mario series after Mario Advance 4 is finally released. This is in the preview for Mario Advance 4.

Why did people ignore these statements.  I've known for months of these 2d rumblings.  I don't forget what Shig says in interviews.  Just like I'll never forget he said its time for Mario to grow up or that the true sequel to Mario 64 is still in development.  I guess growing up ment for Mario and Luigi to get a fifth finger and cleaning devices.

"I guess growing up ment for Mario and Luigi to get a fifth finger and cleaning devices."

When did Mario ever not have five fingers?  He has five on the cover of Super Mario Bros 3 and I'm talking about the NES version in case you think they changed it for the GBA game.  If he used to have only four they changed it WELL before Super Mario Sunshine came out or Miyamoto made that "growing up" comment.

"If the next Mario game is 3D (which I think it will be) I want it to return to the original platformer design of having several levels (like 50 or so) with one goal each: beat the level. Ever since Super Mario 64 every platformer only has like ten levels and the goal is to collect a bunch of stupid crap. Back in the glory days of Mario platformers like Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island each level only required you to get from one end to the other and everything had a more action based approach. Sometimes you had levels that had a secret exit (that usually would unlock secret levels) or you would have a boss battle."

This isn't an entirely new idea - games like Crash Bandicoot have done it.  Still, I have long awaited a Mario game in this format.  That's not to say I want it to be like Crash Bandicoot gameplay - I just want it to have a similar structure for progress.

The alternative, I think, is to go the other way - MORE free-form and explorative in nature than SM64 or SMS.  Instead having individual levels and events, have one huge, open world.  I found that it very irritating in SMS when a particular event would only use half of the level.  Why not combine them all and let you tackle whatever Shine you want in any order?  I'd much prefer that to SMS's half-linear structure.

So, in other words, I want Nintendo to either be completely linear, or completely non-linear. Either would be great, but I'm tired of the SMS format.

Shig was questioned about what he meant about "growing up" after Luigi's Mansion was shown and his response was about the fingers.  I don't know why he said it.  I've never cared to look at the old games to check the fingers.  Maybe he ment in the game and not just in the designs as it wasn't until this gen (with the exception of some Rare games last gen) that characters realy achieved individual fingers in games.  Or maybe he ment it was growing up becaus the whole game was about gohsts, but no matter how you put it the games actually got kiddier in my opinion.  He made the games more grounded in reality by getting rid of powerups and giving Mario and Luigi machines, but the watergun really hurt the image worse than it helped even though it took the series away from its out of this fantacy happenings like flying in a coon suit.

A huge 3d overworld would be cool.  From there one would access the many themed platforming levels like temples in Zelda.

Well yeah, but it seems every 3D platformer these days has a giant hub. It works for Zelda because it's an adventure game, it even worked for Mario 64 because you didn't have to travel for ages and/or solve a whole bunch of tedious puzzles just to gain access to the next world.

Games like Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro and so on started introducing the whole "YOU'LL HAVE TO WORK EXTRA HARD TO REACH THE NEXT FUN BIT! GO FIND 40,000 BITS OF CRAP TO UNLOCK THE DOOR, THEN FIND JUMPING BOOTS COMBINED WITH ONIONS TO JUMP INTO THE DOOR. WHOOPS, DOOR'S BROKEN, GO FIND 4 BILLION HAMMERS"

I just want the classic map screens back, ala Mario 3/Mario World, where the biggest puzzle was finding a hammer to break a rock to access a bonus level. ;__;

Yeah but Crash sucks at it.  I find with Crash Bandicoot it's more like a sidescroller but you go forward the whole time instead of from left to right.  With my suggestion the levels are still very full 3D with a camera.  Crash has never felt truly 3D to me.  With my idea you have to be careful with the level design or else you just could get another Sonic Adventure-like game where you hold forward the whole time.

"The alternative, I think, is to go the other way - MORE free-form and explorative in nature than SM64 or SMS. Instead having individual levels and events, have one huge, open world."

That's a cool idea.  Though you still have to have some specific objectives or else it's not much of a game.  I think Jak II is supposed to be similiar to that idea.  It's supposed to have an open ended area similiar to GTA3.  If they made a big open world Mario I would love it if several of the areas were locations from Super Mario RPG.

I want a fully 3d Mushroom Kingdom with villages and farms.  I want air ships and boats on water.  I want to train Yoshis that grow uniquely depending on what you feed them so you can traverse the kingdom on Yoshi like Epona in Zelda.  I want hidden warp pipes that can be used early in the game to make it to the next continent/world of stages.  I want individual abilities from powerups like gliding, growing, shrinking, hovering, fire flower power, free form flying, speed, high jumping, and swimming.  Well that is just the beginning of my wish list.  But I can almost bet none of it will be in the next game.

Well Mario Sunshine offered all the things you said exept the air ships. There was boats on water, there was the fruit-yoshi system and yoshis made those different platforms by spitting it at baddies, there was warp pipes that linked to levels.

There was powerups with the FLOOD with similar things you wanted minus the fire flower power. There was also villages and  some scattered farms in SMS.

So why are you nagging about things that you think werent in the game that was accually in it.

i want a huge world (like a million square miles) that's round and if you hold in one direction for like 16 hours you get to where you started from.

i want mario to carry luigi around in his back pack and you can swap between them at any time by pressing the z button.

i want mario to grow old as i play the game.  every hour in the game equals one year in mario's universe.  so if you can't beat the game in under 40 hours mario grows too old and decrepit to beat bowser and you lose.

i want to be able to enter in the konami code at the title screen and get a hogillion-kabillion lives.

i also want a gold toilet seat.
