I am just going to post my list of must see horror/slasher/thrillers.  I am planning on watching these:
1. Halloween 1
2. A nightmare on elm street 1
3. Friday the 13th 1&2
4. Phantasm
5. The Omen
6. Black Christmas
7. Scream 1
8. Silent night, deadly night
9. Jacobs Ladder
10. The Shining
12. Silence of the lambs
13. The texas chainsaw massacre
14. Evil dead 1&2
15. Fright Night
16. May
17. Donnie Darko(only one i havent seen yet)

I set up a movie theatre type setting in my living room, and about 10 buddies come over for the weekend.  Great fun!

That's a pretty good lineup.  I would add The Sixth Sense and The Exorcist to the list though.  Through in some old classics like War of the Worlds in there too.

That adds up to how many days?

The only thing I will get for next halloween (if the brats start collecting) is a stack of AOL CDs. That'll teach those kids to demand candy from strangers!

Donnie Darko is far from a horror movie, but it's a great movie. . . you should definitely see it.  Just don't expect a slasher

The Shining with Jack Nicholson?  Extremely scary...i guess just a personal preference.

We're going to watch 5 today, 6 tomorrow and 6 Sunday.

The sixth sense the exorcist and Night of the living dead are all alternate selections, among others.  Sometimes we just get in a mood for something, and change the list.

Only reason the shining sacared me a little bit was because I tried to imagine the things in the book, and I waited in suspense to finally see what they looked like, and was extremely dissapointed.  The way I pictured everything while reading was MUCH more scary than anythihng in that movie.

I didn't read the book , so maybe thats why.  I often save the book until after the movie, so i wont be disappointed.  But i'll tell you the music, camera work and overall feeling of the movie is unsettling.  Obviously, when i say scary, i dont mean i'm jumping out of my seat.  IMO, very few movies are actually scary, in the literal sense.

I prefer the remake of The Shining.  Because Stephen King did it, and he hated Kubricks (sp?) version and had been very vocal about not liking it too.  But he had to quiet down so he could do his own version of it.  King's version is faithful to the book.

He hated Kubricks version because he's a jackass.  He gave approval to the script, so why bitch after the fact.?  The Stephen King version stayed true to the book, but sucked.  In terms of movies, the two arent even close in quality.  As a movie, Kubricks version is widely accepted as a horror classic.

I would add the movie that you either like or you hate, "Signs."

Absolutely bone-chilling in an Eternal Darkness sort of way...

Bill, never mention Eternal Darkness and Signs in the same sentence again please.  I find it revolting.

The new version is all fine and dandy, except the casting COMPLETELY sucked ass.  Kubrick's version was the better for that reason alone.  The second version just annoyed the hell out of me.  Whoever picked the actor for Danny should be drug out into the street and cut into very small pieces.

Signs was great. I was gonna watch it but we ended up watching some 80s horror movie that was comicbook-esque. Scareshow or something like that. There was beast in a wooden box and this old custodian guy opened it and got eated! The blood looked like red water but it was cool. I also played some RE and got the shat scared out of me. *Spoilers* I entered the room where you fight the snake and I KNEW there was a snake coming (Richard was just down the hall) and then the game paused for a fraction of a second to go to a cutscene. I'm like ok ok, let's get to the snake battle already. Yet the  intant the snake appeared, I STILL got scared. I'm affraid of being alone in the dark.

CREEPshow! That was it! Good stuff. The bug guy was awesome. He reminded me of a combination of Adrian Monk and and Enron executive.

How about essential music.... ironically Castlevania doesn't provide a good source.  There is always Thriller....

SPOOKY!

To be serious for a minute, my usually halloween song selection includes the following:

-Misfits, old and a few "new" songs (including their cover of Monster Mash)
-The original monster mash of course
-Thriller (seriously, who doesnt listen to this once in oct and want to do the dance?)
-Oingo Boingo (namely, Dead Mans Party and No One Lives Forever
-Some Nightmare Before Christmas covers (like She Wants Revenges version of "Kidnap the sandy claws" and Marilyn Mansons "this is halloween"
-Michael Myers theme (usually some remixed techno version as well as the original)
-the theme from Pyscho
-Nightwish's cover of The Phantom of the Opera song
-Tubular Bells (the excorcist theme)
- x-files theme
- tales from the crypt theme
- and this one song from OCRemix i was going to link to but cant find anymore.. it was a take on the Boo's mansion level from Mario64. it set a really creepy mood. anyone know which one im talking about?

then theres the songs that are halloween classics that i throw on there for good measure like

-"The Blob" by the five blobs
- ghostbusters theme
- addams family theme
- the munsters theme
- i put a spell on you by jay hawkins (though i like this song all year round..)

usually though, i'll just listen to nothing but misfits songs. great stuff for this time of year

It was removed for not meeting standards (being little more than the original music with some audio clips thrown in).  I've probably still got it somewhere.  The full title is Super Mario 64 Haunted Hell (IncuCujoKondoD.Bros. Mix) if you want to search for it.
