The end of The Lord of the Rings?
« on: October 28, 2003, 04:02:45 PM »
The games that EA has put out on Lord of the Rings are amazing, and anyone who says they aren't should burn! The question is will EA continue to put out these Amazing games, a la Rouge Squadron, or are they done? I heard of a LotR trilogy game but I think it was by (bleh) Universal Interactive. I'm not sure, but any information would be greatly appreciated!

Well, no more LOTR games are planned for GCN.  However, EA is making a LOTR real-time strategy game called Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth which will be released for PC.

Which I'm very interested in, especially since it's being made by Westwood and is utilizing the Generals engine. I seriously doubt EA will give up the LotR franchise, although they might not continue it in the same way as TTT and RotK. One thing I DON'T want EA doing is fabricating its own plots for new LotR games- anything they make should be based off of Tokien's work. Otherwise, leave it be.

I would normally agree; however, both LOTR and even Harry Potter (both by EA) successfully, in my opinion, broke this unfavorable chain.

I believe EA's PC-based game is not online; however, if some one could correct me on that feel free to.

Meanwhile, Vivendi is working on two LOTR games of their own and one (developed by Turbine Entertainment) is online game (RPG, I believe) while the other is a real time strategy game.

Oh, and mouse, I did some research and your fears of EA making their own storylines is forbidden by their contract.  Apparently, they can only create video game sequences at least mentioned in the movies.

Good- I was a bit edgy enough about the story additions in the moveis (especial the Two Towers), and I didn't want somebody like EA screwing it up for real.

Too bad Willow sucked.

Anyway, I believe the MMORPG that Sierra/Vivendi was making is cancelled, but then RTS, War of the Ring, just recently went gold.

Yeah, it was Lord of the Rings: The Treason of Isengard that was cancelled.  That was going to be made by...um...Universal I believe.

I just checked the Lord of the Rings Friday: Week 1 feature IGN did, and the guy who was interviewed stated that they already have 65 people working on "next year's game".

Perhaps a game based on The Silmarillion?

On this level, you have to sink Numenor... lol

But if they did make a game based on that book, what would Morgoth (or Melkor) look like? If you have never heard of this guy, Sauron and the balrogs are his servents! But I think he was smitted or something... I haven't read the book in a while...

If you look on the cover of Ballentine Books version on Unfinished Tales, that's Melkor with Sauron as a wolf. John Howe and Alan Lee have also done some great artwork of him.

Yeah, I have to see that. It's good Peter Jackson recruited those guys to do concept art for the movies, those guys know their stuff.

Edit: Apparently, Sauron's physical form in the prelude of FOTR (the movie) as a towering "armored man" is based on some artwork of Morgoth, which in turn is based on a few of JRR Tolkiens sketches depicting Morgoth.

I don't think EA has those kind of contracts. I think they have rights to the movies, not the books. So, unless New Line Cinema made a Sillmilrillion movie (which would be awesome) they cant have it as a game. Of course, Universal could always make a bad game from it but it would be... ya know bad.
