Why no Mario RPG sequel?
« on: October 20, 2003, 06:28:10 PM »
Way back in the good old Super Nintendo days, Squaresoft (now known as Square-Enix) made a game with Nintendo. It was called Super Mario RPG. Many people consider this the best Mario game of all time. While I did not get the chance to finish the game, I fell in love with it at first sight. Then came the N64 days... the system had just about no RPGs, while Squaresoft made great games for the Playstation. Nintendo tried to help the drought with Paper Mario, which was originally going to be called Super Mario RPG 2. Now we are probablly more than half-way through the GameCube's life, and while the RPG lineup is better, Square is back with the company, there are still no plans to bring back the Mario RPG series. My question is simply why aren't they doing something about this? Sure Paper Mario tiself was a good game, but it was nothing compared to Mario RPG. Now that there is a Mario and Luigi game coming out, and a Paper Mario sequel announced, why aren't they working with Square on a Mario RPG sequel?

Notice no details have been released on Paper Mario 2...It makes you think, doesn't it?

Yeah, but the name"Paper Mario 2" tells me not to expect a Mario RPG anytime soon. Besides, if Square was making it, we would have heard from them by now.

Thank you! Paper Mario, while fun, paled in comparasion to the excellent Super Mario RPG. My thirst for another Mario RPG has yet to be taken care of, and the game remains one of my all time fav games, and without a doubt my fav SNES game.

As is, it was a excellent RPG that built a foundation from the world of mario, although a story that warrants Bowser joining forces with Mario again should be used... as that was a excellent feature in the game. I also feel that this was the best Mario game to date, unless you count Smash Bros. Melee.

Well, the same team that made Crystal Chronicles have been working on a game for some time now.  Maybe we'll see/hear something at E3.

I thought it was a really good game.  Definately worth a play through.  Although like a lot of people have said, Mario RPG is much better.

Paper Mario is to Mario RPG
-----------as---------------
Zelda's Quest is to Link to the Past

(In other words, CRAP to GENIUS.  Paper Mario/Zelda's Quest were crap and Mario RPG/Link to the Past were genius.)

Actually,  I'd say  Paper  Mario is to Mario RPG as   Majora's Mask is to  Ocarina of Time.  They're both  OUTSTANDING games, some of the best ever made.  The same can be said for PM and Mario RPG

Paper Mario was just as good as Super Mario RPG...The only thing that SMRPG had that Paper Mario lacked in was comic relief...

I actually agree, but  I didn't say that because I didn't want to get flamed. :x   one thing good about PM:  you can't just level your way up until you're infinitely more powerful than your opponents.   Your level ups only increase your HP, FP, and badge points, not your  strength, speed, resistance, etc.  It keeps the game   fresh.

Because Mario RPG was little more than a simplified Final Fantasy in gameplay, while Paper Mario was unique and amazingly fun.

I think it's better than FF in actual gameplay.

I dunno about a true sequal to Mario RPG, but the sequal to Paper Mario is Mario & Luigi, coming out on the GBA.

Probably because it isn't as complicated as most RPGs...Same for me; the more complicated an RPG, the more I dislike it...

Square-Enix is making FF: CC for the GCN in order to make Nintendo happy, so they can make a lot of games for the GBA.

The people here have their doubts Nintendo would give them GBA access for one GC game. Either multiple games or no requirement at all.

Mario and Luigi is not the sequel to Paper Mario, Paper Mario 2 is coming out for the GCN ( was announced around same time as AC2)

One problem that I had with Paper Mario, was that you could never increase your charater's stats. You could only have one follow you, and only Mairo would level up by magic, hearts, and badges.
