A good friend will bail you out of jail but a best friend will be sitting next to you saying darn we really screwed up.

I'm fairly certain it's illegal only to share music, but one kind of follows the other.

I always thought downloading the music itself was illegal. Sharing it adds ++ to the illegal activity. Meh. I AM CRIMINAL, BOO HOO.

Well its both, kinda. I remember (before Kazaa) when they had the 24-hour rule (You must delete this song after 24 hours yada yada yada) on web sites hosting the music. So I believe its not the downloading, but the possesion and hosting of music that is the problem. But that has probably changed.

But either way, its all a big no-no.

The RIAA are no better than a bunch of extortionist thugs and should be handled with hot vigilante justice.

Er I mean, I buy CDs all the time, but only cheap ones. 15 bucks and up is just insane. I prefer classical, bargain disco packages (LOL), and 2nd-hand CDs because I can usually get them for under 5 bucks a pop.

So, yeah, sharing music on Kazaa is a great way to have the recording industry goons come to your house and break your knees, because they're bigger and they can.

I'm not going to jail.  The only songs I have downloaded were the ones Infernal and KnowsNothing posted.  The only songs I have on my computer I copied of CD's that I own or my mother or brother owns so I could make copies of some songs.  I am allowed to do that because I read that you are allowed to make copies of your CD's as long as you don't share them with other people.  I guess taking my mother and brother's CD's and making copies of songs is wrong, but after enough time I usually just take the original CD and claim it for my own.  But I don't burn songs for other people who don't live in my house.

No, I'm still pretty sure downloading music in of itself isn't what's illegal. Is it illegal to accept a pirated game given to you by a friend or to actually copy the game? However, pretty much anything you download Kazaa ends up getting shared anyway, so, like I said, it's hard to have one without the either.

Well, if downloading the music isn't the illegal part, then I guess you just don't get a login (when you first get Kazaa, it constantly asks you to get one; just don't!).  Without a login, you can't upload things (I THINK that's how it works).  By the way, interesting sig there, mouse_clicker.

Downloading music is illegal in the US.  It's legal in Canada.  Reason being that we pay a hefty tax on blank optical media.

My rant of the day:  I couldn't care less about downloading because the prices of CDs are inflated so much.  I own over 200 CDs, 100 albums and who knows how many tapes.  When i download, i look for-you guessed it-groups i already like.  Meaning that more likely than not, i own multiple CDs from said artist.  If i want to find some live songs or try a couple off a new CD, so be it.  I've paid my hard earned money to support my favorites, at an average of 15$ per CD, so they can kiss me arse if they sue me.  That will be my defense.

The music labels have made FAR more money off of me since the MP3 revolution than they did before.  Reason being, like I said, we have a large amount of tax on optical media in Canada, which acts as our shield against the music labels.  Since I don't really download a lot of commercial music, but I use a large amount of CDRs, the music companies must love me.
