Any news on next GB Zelda?
« on: September 07, 2003, 09:59:33 AM »
Has anybody heard anything about the next GameBoy Zelda?  I thought I heard about something called The Triforce Gods, but I think that turned out to be the Four Swords redo-thingy.  I know everybody's waiting for WW2 (myself included), but I think that the GB Zeldas were pretty sweet too.  If anybody's heard anything, give me a heads-up.
I've gotta say what I've gotta say, and then I swear I'll go away, but I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise.

All that is known is that it is in development by the team at Capcom that worked on the Oracle games...

First of all The Triforce Gods is The Triforce of the Gods which is the Japanese title of A Link to the Past. You see A Link to the Past/Four Swords didn't come out in Japan until after it came out in the US and some stupid magazine made a big deal about its Japanese release. They referred to it as its Japanese title (The Triforce of the Gods) and so a lot of people thought it was a new game.

However there is in fact supposed to be a new GBA Zelda game made by Capcom coming out sometime or another. A couple of months before this years E3 Miyamoto talked about the game. He said that Capcom had been working on it since sometime in 2001 and that they had temporally stopped the games development to work on A Link to the Past/Four Swords. He also said that the game would be shown at E3 but that never happened. Sometime shortly after E3 I believe I read an interview with Miyamoto at ign.com in which he said that neither of the Zelda games shown at E3 were the GBA Zelda he had been talking about. So apparently this game is still in development and is supposed to be a classic single player game.

Ive heard its going to be a sequel to wind waker.  The name, so far, hasnt been mentioned yet.  It is going to be cel shaded again.  The next zelda after that better be in gamecube graphics.  Cel shading is cool and can be nice, yet their are things i hate about it, i want graphics!

Uh, we are talking about the GameBoy Advance Zelda game not the next GameCube Zelda. You would have known that if you had bothered to read ANYTHING from this topic. Good grief. Also what the hell is "GameCube graphics"?

I find it slightly odd that this will be the 4th original Zelda game for the Gameboy and yet all we've gotten from Mario in the handheld World is a few ports.

I consider Mario and Luigi to be a new Mario game...Even if it is an RPG, it has platformer elements

So? We've also gotten a new GBA Metroid as well.

That's another good point- 4 original Zelda games, at least 1 original Metroid game (depends if you count Zero Mission or not), and one original pseudo-Mario game. Personaly I'd love to see what Miyamoto could pull off with a classic 2D side-scrolling Mario game again.

Not 'til EVERY Mario game ever made is on the GBA. Including the one you can get on graphing calculators which I'm not even sure is legal. And while they're porting old games, Miyamoto will be working on the ULTIMATE MARIO GAME: Ms. Super Mario Man Street Turtles.

That game would rule.

but the speaking of the mario game on the calculator, there is also a megaman game.  I'm sure somone would've done something about this if it was illegal, but I have the sneaking suspicion it's not.

Getting back on topic I really hope that this new GBA Zelda game will be a sequel to ALttP. Now I mean that game play wise not story wise. It should be strongly based on the game play of ALttP while making new additions. Kind of like how Metroid Fusion's game play was strongly based on Super Metroid's only with new abilities and stuff.

I also hope that Capcom will make it more of a serious game like ALttP with less childish humor crap that was obviously aimed at 5 year olds. I'm not saying there shouldn't be any humor as even ALttP had it's humorous moments but please no more boxing kangaroos named Ricki that wear boxing gloves. No more friendly Dodongos (sheesh what the hell were they thinking) or giant bears with tiny angel wings. Oh and no more stupid witches that fly around on vacuum cleaners or UFOs for god's sake. I also don't want to see friendly skeleton pirates either.

Also I'd like to see the game grounded more in the traditional fantasy setting like the classics were. No advanced technology like telephones, cameras, or the like. Also no references to Santa Clause or other such things that shouldn't be in the Zelda universe at all.  The above can actually apply to Wind Waker 2 as well since there was plenty of advanced technology that in my opinion shouldn't have been in Wind Waker.

Instead of trying to make the over world one huge dungeon make it more natural and realistic like it was in ALttP. Also in some form or another I'd like to see the return of a Dark World type area which is separate from the normal over world. Maybe some bad guy is trying to take over Hyrule and as part of the game Link has to eventual travel into his land which is a dark horrible ruined place a la the Dark World.

That is all.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Oracle games.  I especially loved Ages; it felt so much like LttP imo

Umm, exactly what are you basing your game count on Mouse Clicker? You say that there will be four original Zelda games which leads me to believe you are counting any original games in that series from any of the different GameBoys. However you then say that there is only 1 original Metroid GB game. If you are counting all the games from all the different GBs you should have said 3 because you have Metroid II: The Return of Samus as well as Metroid Fusion and of course Zero Mission is on the way. This also applies for Mario as there were those Super Mario Land games which as far as I know were original games.

Of course if you want to count only GBA games then that's a different story.

Bah, I forgot Metroid II. Can't believe it, too- Metroid's one of my favorite series. Thanks for reminding me.

I guess forgot about the 2 Super Mario Lands, too, although they're over a decade old and shouldn't really count (then again, so is Metroid II). Still, that's 4 Zelda games, 3 Metroid games, and only 2 Mario games- Nintendo's been porting over NES and SNES Mario games ever since.

There's one more thing that I would like to see in the next GBA Zelda that I almost always forget about when making these wish list things. I really think it would be cool if they would add a day and night system in like the 3D games.

You know I just recently purchased A Link to the Past for the GBA and for the first time I kind of found the dungeon designs to be boring. I would really like it if they designed the dungeons like they were 3D in the new GBA Zelda. In A Link to the Past you got a little of that since some rooms had two levels but it was pretty basic and straight forward. I would like to see the rooms more complicated with multiple levels like the 3D Zeldas. Basically the designers shouldn't feel restricted to making strictly 2D old fashioned dungeon designs.

I think it would be pretty interesting if the new GBA Zelda played alot like the 3D games except it would still of course actually be 2D with the isometric view. Like they could add automatic jumping and having a fight system similar to the 3D games would be interesting too. What I mean by the fight thing is that you would be able to do combos similar to what you can do in OoT and WW instead of just bashing the button as fast as possible.

I still feel it should be modeled more after A Link to the Past than the Oracle games but at the same time they should take the game play to the next level.

EDIT:  By the way I haven't gotten to play Four Swords but I'm very curious about how the dungeons were designed. Are they anything like what I described above or is it the basic old fashioned 2D Zelda stuff?

Ninty better not add automatic jumping...I live for Roc's feather...

I think the Game Boy games and the console games should be separated somehow...There is no reason for Ninty to change a winning formula

I'm sorry but I just don't have the love for Roc's Feather like you do. Personally I find it a little annoying. That probably mainly comes from the fact that in the GB Zeldas I feel like I have to switch out items every few seconds. Seeing a hole always makes me sigh since I know I have to go into the sub-screen and pull out that damn feather. I also don't like the fact that they made the shield a secondary item either. No other Zelda games makes you choose between the shield and some other item. Frankly half of the items should have been automatic but for some reason with the GB games they decided you needed to pick and choose. Maybe if like on the next GB they have 4 face buttons it wouldn't be so bad since you could have 4 items out at once. Being allowed to only have two items out at once is just annoying and stupid. What's worse is that since you almost always need your sword you are really only allowed to have one other item out at a time.

As far as the "winning formula" I just wanted to spice things up. Also most of the things I suggested probably haven't been possible on the older GBs or SNES so I thought it would be interesting if they tried something new for the GBA.

I agree.  Those Oracle games were kinda lame compared to the majesty that is Link to the Past.  And that is a great idea for the next game boy to have 4 face buttons.  So many more options would become available game-wise.  Like in the THPS games for gba, using shoulder buttons for grabs and flip tricks was waaaay too awkward.  (Just an example.)
