3DO Sells off Game Properties
« on: August 21, 2003, 08:43:59 AM »
Someone paid three-quarters of a million dollars to make Army Men games.  Find out who the fool lucky bidder is inside.  Updated!

As many of you know by now, 3DO went bankrupt earlier this May.  To help raise money to pay off its outstanding debts, the company decided to sell off its assets, most of which were its key game franchises and licenses.  Many companies were interested in some of 3DOs more infamous brand names, and a list of who got what and for how much can be seen below.

  • Namco - Street Racing Syndicate ($1.5 million)
  • Ubi Soft - Heroes of Might and Magic ($1.3 million)
  • Crave - Army Men ($750k)
  • Microsoft - High Heat Baseball ($450k)
  • JoWooD (Austria) - Jacked ($90k)

In addition, ex-3DO CEO Trip Hawkins was interested in some of his company's older titles (those released before 2001), for which he purchased for $200,000.  The Cubix license was also available in the auction, and although no winning bid has been reported as of yet, 4kids Productions is likely the winner, as they were the only bidder for it.  In all, the auction raised $4.6 million for 3DO's bankruptcy efforts.

UPDATE: PGC has learned that 3DO still has some assets remaining that did not sell in the auction.  These remaing assets, which include Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse, will be put up for sale starting today, August 21.  Any company that did not take place in the auction may now freely purchase these remaining properties, provided the price is right.

4 horsmen is starangly absenst.  has been all along.  no one really knows the fate of that game yet (or if they do, they're not telling us).
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I totally forgot about Four Horsemen.  I'll see if I can dig up who got it, or if it was even up for auction.

And nintendo is strangely absent.... Nintendo could have gotten some quality titles on the cheap.. i mean High Heat for 450 thousand? Anwyays, i still have hope that Nintendo buys 4 Horsemen, but that would be too good to be true no?

The titles aren't quality anymore, or at least we have yet to see. Since 3DO is no more it's going to be entirely new teams working on the games and they're most likely going to be very different. All they have now is brand name, and not too many people liked 3DO.
