We overcome hotel wifi this week to bring you the finest conversation about the latest Switch releases. And to help out in Jon's absence, we bring in guest Syrenne McNulty. Kicking off New Business is Greg who discovers Rocket League for himself after hearing so much about it. Is the long-awaited Switch version worth the compromises made to make it work? Syrenne similarly weighs in on the tradeoffs necessary to make Doom, LA Noire and Skyrim portable. She's also got you covered if you want to hear about Snipperclips Plus, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon, and *sharp intake of air* Nintendo Presents New Style Boutique 3: Styling Star. Guillaume has impressions for RIVE, the new shooter from the makers of the criminally overlooked Toki Tori 2. Finally, James finds that the "Switch on an airplane" falls a bit short of what Nintendo's marketing promised us.

If Listener Mail this week has a theme, it's unconfortable thought experiments: what new horrors can we create by affixing "Wa" to our favorite characters? How low are we willing to go to sell out? Can we cook up better (read: worse) fictional titles than Glitter Metroid or Blatterhouse? And in a world where "Pyramid Head Bomber" is a thing, can we think up any ill-advised crossovers Konami hasn't already made reality?

Man. Coming in hot with a hot take, but I cannot stand Syrenne. She comes on and it’s just word vomit. She dominates the conversation, acts like she knows it all, which is forgivable but her presence doesn’t foster a conversation in the slightest — it’s just her talking AT everybody else (myself included). If somebody else has the nerve to speak up and say something, she usually condescendingly shuts them up as quickly as possible so she can return to her monologue. It makes for my least favorite episodes. #sorrynotsorry its just how I feel in my heart.

If that's the way she comes across to you, it's probably mostly my fault and is the result of my editing combined with a less-than-stable Skype call. She'll say "Moving on" to keep the conversation flowing and on track, which is often needed on RFN. I'll be more mindful of the way I edit coming back from interjections that stop one's train of thought, but I assure you that during recording, we don't find her rude or monopolizing the conversation.

I don’t find anything wrong with her. I enjoy her a lot actually.

Her doom comments while I don’t disagree with anything she said I still think the game is incredibly fun on switch and I didn’t have the control issues once I adjusted them in the menus. But she’s great. Have her on more often.

Syrenne isn't someone that I relate to very well either. Does that really matter, though? Her opinions are still valid, others like hearing her, and I'm reasonably confident that getting my personal stamp of approval isn't on her "to do" list. At least she's better than NAME REDACTED, FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN.


Plus, if RFN started dropping people from the podcast just because some people didn't like their personalities, there wouldn't be any survivors left to speak... So speak on, sweet podcasters. Continue to piss all of us forum-goers right off for as long as possible.




I do like the snake in the grass post. 'Cuz that's what us forum members are... slithery, bitey snakes.   ;)

Yeah I kinda agree Falcon could've worded that a lot nicer. Sure they said "hot take incoming" so maybe it's not as serious as it reads, but that type of snark-jokey intent sometimes gets lost on the Internet. Gotta keep in mind these people are putting a lot of time into entertaining you, for free, and read the comments too.

I think Syrenne's always a good addition, both because she actually does game design, and also since she plays games the rest of the crew doesn't seem to. That's good for variety!
I listen to these in traffic so not really bothered by longer discussions. I guess if one of the podcasters has a ton of games to discuss you could have them talk about 2 initially, rotate to the others' New Business and then come back for the rest... But honestly I don't really mind at all.

She has very strong opinions but with her I’m fine with it for some reason I’m fine with it even if I disagree like with doom. Plus she’s pretty quick and moves from game to game.

Great episode guys and gal, especially the end, lol. I noticed that in this and 549, there is talk of standards concerning emails. I don't know about other letter writers, but as for me, I take inspiration from Jon and James's old Now Playing segments. You two didn't just set the gold standard, you set the iridium standard! If you don't know what that is, just ask Zach Miller. Here's a hint, it took out the dinosaurs because they fell short. ;)

We're all just walking in the footsteps of giants, hoping we don't trip on the way.
