well even though the game is made by the creators of the xeno games, it wont be like them, at least from what i have seen
basically the art direction is spectacular and the graphics are beautiful
but it is not just monolith soft creating this game- it is a collaboration between them and some folks from tri-ace
tri-ace is my favorite rpg developer- they make some of the best games out there with great battle systems (star ocean, valkyrie profile)
the battle system seems to be a hybrid of sorts- it is card based but not like lost kingdoms
instead the cards symbolize attack, magic, and items in battle so instead of choosing them from a menu, you choose the corresponding card
i know it is kind of hard to explain but here are some movies of the game in action- one is battle scene, one is gameplay, and one is a movie
enjoy:

This game's gonna be sweet, I just know it.  Now if they could fix the flaws in Xenosaga with Ep. 2 then Monolith'll be A-OK in my book.

The cards are what really turn me off. I hate collecting things in the game

I might check it out when its closer to release and we know more about the combat system tho.

you know Baten Kaitos is from the Arabian Al Batn al Kaitos, or Batn Qaytus meaning the "Whale's Belly" or "Belly of Cetus(im guessing a whale)". Its actually a star. However im not sure how this game will fly with the public with such an unusual name. I don't know what they would call it. Certainly not Whale's Belly.

Oh no! Prerendered backgrounds! I HATE prerendered backgrounds. And those character portraits look weird, the blond character's gender is pretty hard to identify (at first I thought male prettyboy, but later realized it might be a girl...). The animators are skilled, though.

Well at least your willing to give the game a shot despite your reservations. I don't want a repeat of the last Baten Kaitos thread LOL We all remember how well that went.... I love the amount support Nintendo is getting from Namco. It really bodes well for Nintendo's future.

yeah if you have watched the movie you can see that the game is not truely card based- the cards just represent your menu
basically if you put together a good combination of cards, special attacks will take place
i like the look of it so far- with tri-ace and monolith soft at the helm i am sure the game will be great
