I really hope the DK game is in fact DK and not DKC. The DK for SGB (Super Game Boy, you remember that thing?) was the best GB game of all times!

"a singular and easily playable product to make, Nintendo will lead on a new way of growth. We want to stop to make video games ever more complicate or more difficult. Instead we want to make simpler software for a larger audience."

I don't like that statement.  Whenever Nintendo talks about "simpler" games we get something like Luigi's Mansion or Wario World.  You know, games that can be beaten in a weekend.  Games that have no replay value.  Where the hell does Nintendo get the idea that people want to play such games?  If you look at what titles sell huge it's usually games that provide the player with a lot of freedom and have a long game length ie: complicated games.  Nintendo's big sellers of the last generation were games like Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, and Ocarina of Time, all of which were what I consider complicated games.  I can't think of ANY example of a "simple game" selling huge aside from Tetris.  One dimensional glorified mini-games that can be beaten in a few hours are NOT what I buy Nintendo games for.  As I recall "simple games" at launch are what basically killed the Cube from the get go because people finished all their games in about a month and then had nothing to play for six months.

Ian Sane--I don't think that is what they mean. Yes, they have released some easy games this gen, but I don't think that was their intention. I think when they say less complicated, they want to get back to games that are just pick up and play. This is a problem a LOT of games are having these days. Nintendo is mainly having a difficult time trying to find that balance between simple control and complex gameplay.

In many ways, I can see exactly what they are saying. I have no problem playing modern games, but my dad barely touches them anymore. He could sit front in of our old NES all day and have fun, but if he even tries one of the latest games there is a lot frustration and questions about what he is suppose to do. This is the hump Nintendo wants to get over.

I think that is a goal worth pursuing, but right now the market has shifted away from family entertainment. This is Nintendo's achilles heel. They want to sell games to everyone, but section of the industry that is driving the market are males in their late teens and early twenties who just want something cool to play on the weekend. Mario doesn't exactly fit that bill. Actually, I don't think he ever did. When Nintendo was on top, it was cool to play video games. Now games these days have to be cool if you want them played. Nintendo has to work on image appeal along with accessible gameplay.

This is pretty big news, however, as I have seen it on MSNBC and a bunch of other mainstream news sites.  I think a lot of it had to do with qwelling the investors after they said the gamecube wasn't doing so hot lately.  I can't wait for DK, with Rare gone hopefully it won't be a collect-a-thon.

egman, Namco is part of this whole Triforce thing (Namco-Sega-Nintendo, which I'm assuming is still around).

And I think that Star Fox looks very very much good fun yay.  Can't wait for it.

This was IMO one of the main reason for the success of GTA 3, the game was simply pick up and play, yet it also has tons of freedom and length.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about Nintendo buying Namco or anything like that.  IGN reported that Iwata said buying third parties was not in their business strategy.  Otherwise great news.  Although I did find myself thinking "not Namco" when I read about Namco's handling of DK.  Oh well, I'm sure it will turn out good in the end.

Namco made PacMan World and IMO that was a pretty cool platformer. Get from Point A to Point B kind of like the old Mario games but with a 3d view.

Namco developing DK? And Star Fox? Hmm, I wonder just what those sneaky lads at Nintendo are doing. Are they putting all their effort into a few upcoming mega games? I mean, they'd have a lot of free time, what with not developing any of their own franchises anymore.

I know that Namco is a part of the Triforce deal, but I'm pretty much in shock about the DK connection.

To be frank, most of the new relationships Nintendo has been forging with Japanese 3rd parties seem shakey at the most. I think Square will be through with the GC after FF:CC--they really want a piece of the GBA and nothing more. I'm still scratching my head over the fact that SK is developing MGS:TS even though the parties will have some well thought out responses to squash the perception that Konami is determined not to spend a scent on GC development, at least when it comes to it's A teams . I'm not even sure Capcom is still happy they decided to throw some heavy support towards Nintendo.

But then we have Namco developing a couple of Nintendo franchises, while at the same time they make some REALLY huge moves in terms of exclusives. We are getting an exlusive RPG in a series that has strong following in Japan, then they throw at us a completely new RPG with an extremely strong pedigree of developers behind it. It sounds almost too good to be true.

I'm probably making too much out it, but I just have this feeling that Namco really wants to have a strong relationship with Nintendo, while some of the other 3rd parties are more or less throwing Nintendo a bone because it won't hurt them to do so. Because of this I'm getting pretty excited about what direction the new DK will be heading; waiting for new info is going to kill me.

Nintendo should have bought Acclaim and 3DO and some other crappy company that is doing badly, I mean, they suck now, but they have some nice licenses, for example, Nintendo could make an awesome racer from Burnout, and awesome FPS from Turok, and so on.

THIS JUST IN! NINTENDO BOUGHT EA!

Konami may not have much faith in the Gamecube but, if MGS:TT sells well, that could change.
It's not about Konami not liking Nintendo or anything, it's just a business thing. You can't blame Konami for not wanting to fully back Nintendo before it proves itself. You can't blame it for almost exclusively supporting the PS2 which currently dominates the market either. Nintendo has to take what it can get now and hope it leads to bigger and better things in years to come.

Yep, thats why Mario Party 4 outsold Zelda: TWW in Japan. And why Kirby's Air Ride is outselling F-Zero GX. And why Super Smash Bros Melee is the highest selling game on GameCube. *rolls eyes*

I actually think Nintendo's focus on less complicated and more accessible software for a larger audience is already in full swing.
Most of the big games coming out this Fall for the Gamecube including FZero GX, Kirby Air Ride, Mario Party 5, Mario Kart Double Dash, 1080, and Pokemon Channel fit the bill. They're definitly a lot easier to pick up and play than most of the big titles last year like Super Mario Sunshine, Starfox Adventures, and Metroid Prime. If the Gamecube does a lot better this upcoming holiday season than it did the last one, I think it'll be safe to say Nintendo has the right idea.

3DO doesn't really have the same sort of philosophy as Nintendo. I think Horsemen and Street Racing Syndicate was the only game that people were really looking forward to......hang on.....that's GOOD!
Nintendo, get 3DO!

Then ditch them after they make those games, cause all they'll make are Army Men games........

Now that I think about it, I'm beginning to like more and more Nintendo's strategy. OOT and MM were my favourite games, but I'm much busier now, and as much as I want to, I can't say I like Wind Waker nearly as much as other people seem to. Overall, I'd say I've probobly got more enjoyment out of the Smash Bros. Melee when I spent a week with friends and we had a copy of it. Kudos to Nintendo and their new strategy.

Well, either Microsoft or Ubi-soft are going to get 3DO, not Nintendo.

Yeah, i like Nintendo's new strategy too, im absolutely dying to see how Wario Ware turns out on the Cube. And all the upcoming "simple" games like Four Swords GC, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Party 5 and Mario Kart are looking really good, i really like what Nintendo are doing.

I had no idea that Mario Party 4 outsold Zelda in Japan.  That's just NUTS.  Still I was primarily talking about the North American market so I think my arguement still stands.  In the most profitable videogame market complex games are big sellers.  I also wouldn't consider Super Smash Bros Melee a "simple" game since that game tooks months to unlock everything and actually has a pretty complex fighting engine.  True anyone can do every move but that game requires some serious skill and practice to beat completely.  I was complaining about games like Luigi's Mansion that are ridiculously easy.  Hey if Nintendo means titles like Smash Bros when they talk about "simple games" then I'm all for it.  I just don't think they are.  I think to them "simple" games means one dimensional titles with no challenge or replay value like that Tetra's Trackers game they showed at E3.
