Nintendo to give details of new product next year

Thu August 7, 2003 01:45 AM ET

TOKYO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Japan's Nintendo Co Ltd 7974.OS said on Thursday it planned to reveal details of a new game product in spring next year, giving no further clarification.

President Satoru Iwata made the announcement at a news conference on the videogame maker's business strategy.

In January, Iwata told Reuters that the company was developing a next-generation home videogame console with the aim of launching it in 2005 or 2006, in a bid to restore its clout in the lucrative videogame market.

He also told the news conference that the company planned to strengthen its marketing by introducing a points scheme similar to "air miles", in which consumers would accumulate points by buying Nintendo products.

horray... -_-

..woo

meg... bah i cant even be assed finnishing that word.

aside from being slightly let down, it is a good idea, no better marketing and information gathering than asking the consumers themselfs, alternatively, asking sony/xbawx fans could prove a good idea also.

First off, what does it mean by "new game PRODUCT".
Does that mean it's not a game and instead, new hardware or an accessory or something.

I think we can assume the new console will arrive in 2006.
Nintendo constantly misses release dates that are supposably set in stone.
So I doubt it will meet a "maybe" release date.

The point system could be really neat. I just it will include third-party titles too. It's already a problem that Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo games. The last thing Nintendo needs is something to make them less likely to give third-party games a chance.

i love the idea of a point system, especially seeing has how over half my GC library is made of Nintendo titles as i'm sure many of yours are, but that's gotta suck for third parties. Except in situations where the third party game is cheaper (like F-Zero vs XGRA), people have another reason to choose the Nintendo game over the third party game, higher QC being the first.

I'm kind of torn by the announcement. While with all the stuff I buy I know I would benefit from the point system, I can't help but think that a missed oppurtunity occured with this conference. They have a looming problem with excess inventory heading into the 2k3 holiday season. While I can understand a price cut might have cannablized GBA sales, then why not put out a more aggressive bundle?

I expect the new game product would be the GBA successor. The PSP is already getting way too much hype, not only among gamers, but among some developers as well. I hope Nintendo also announces a new licensing structure because some 3rd parties are ready to jump ship completely when Sony gives the word.

I hope more news comes out of Nintendo soon about upcomming projects and their response to the overstock, because the last thing they need going into the next gen is the perception that they have given up on the GC and its fans.

probably best to continue this topic in this thread.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
