i was reading through some of the posts and have noticed that many people have had their cubes disc drives  burn out. Does this happen to most of the cubes? or is it just a rare occurence?

dude it's very rare, i know you're concerned after your 3rd party memory card fiasto
but this GC drive thing has probably happened to like . 2 percent of people, not 2%, . 2%
just make sure the left and right side of your gamecube have ventilation, i.e. not blocked by anything and you should have no problems

Mine burnt out  I think it was from playing three people taking turns playing Zelda 24/7.

then you should take extra measures to make sure it's cool

Room fans (the electric kind) do wonders when it comes to ventilation. Also, if you live in a (Sub-)Tropical region you should avoid playing during the hottest times.

I sold Cubes from launch day and have never seen a drive crap out. They're tough little machines. We've run them from 10am to 9pm every day for nearly 2 years without ever turning them off during the day. Try doing that with a PS2.

The usual precautions would apply to the Cube as in any disc drive item. For some strange reason, nicotine residue kills drives........so don't smoke around them. Get your cats and dogs away from them as well. Don't play them on the floor or carpet like so many idiots do. The fan will suck in all of the crap from the floor. Learn how to properly load and unload the discs without touching the surface of the disc at all. Don't put the discs back into the DVD game cases after they've been removed for the first time. Store them in a CD jewel case instead. Make sure that the room that you store the Cube in is cool and well ventilated.

It just takes a little effort and some common sense to keep these things running smoothly. Unfortunately, once the machine's novelty has worn off, people get lazy.

In my experience it's harder to insert/remove a disk from a jewel case than those GC disk cases... and all of my disks are completely scratch free.
Nicotine causes a nasty yellow layer on any horizontal surface (like the lens) which might interfere with the laser. Usually it only thickens on exposed surfaces, but maybe it takes a lot less of the stuff to nuke a laser...
Does anyone know if GC disks are prone to DVD rot?

Like I said....I've never seen a Cube crap out. Not even one!!! I've seen 2 XboXes....this was due to faulty fans......and I've seen so many broken PS2s that I honestly couldn't count them all. We actually stopped guaranteeing PS2s, there were that many. In most cases, when we cracked them open, the insides were coated with a nicotine film and/or were filled with pet hair. It was hardly ever warranty due to manufacturers defect....but mainly failure due to customer neglect. The system wasn't designed to tolerate the ineptness of the general public.

If you have the technique down then the stock game cases are okay....but many people have this weird way of removing discs where they put their forefinger on the middle and their thumb at the edge of the disc and then sort of "pry" the disc out. Your fingers touch the surface most every time....or it fumbles out of your fingers, which isn't good for the disc. Go into any video game store and look at the condition of 90% of the used game department's discs. Scratched, scuffed and fingerprinted. Most people's game collections look like crap. It doesn't matter whether the disc "still works"....it isn't good for your hardware. We found that a CD case tends to be a little more manageable for the average person.

Every used game I bought this year, has either had 1-5 very very minor scratches or none at all.

The GC case ejector mechanism is a lot easier to use than that of most jewel cases. And don't even get me started on the evil UT2003 case!
