its a tie over from the n64 drought of RPG's caused by square's departure and all other RPG makers following suit. i think the n64 had all of 2 classic RPG's those being Quest 64 (it had a different name but i forget it, and i used to own that game ) and Aydin Chronicals or something. both dogs by all accounts i heard (personally i didn't mind quest 64, it was far from good though)

Why are there so few good RPGs for PS2?

Well, there aren't many to date, but it took PS2 a while to get a few good ones too.

The way I see it, it goes like this:

(Just the high profile ones)

GameCube
Baten Kaitos
Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcadia
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2
Phantasy Star Online Episode 3

Playstation 2
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XII
Xenosaga Episode 1
Xenosaga Episode 2
Wild Arms 3
Suikoden III
Star Ocean 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
.Hack
Tales of Destiny 2

Xbox
Fable
Shin Megami Tensi Nine
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Ones that I left out that I consider to be very iffy, are these:

GameCube
Giftpia
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms 2
Custom Robo
Yugioh: Falsebound Kingdom

PS2
Unlimited Saga
Final Fantasy XI
Dragon Quest 5

Xbox
Morrowind
Sudeki

I may have missed a couple of games for Xbox or PS2, but please, rather than flame me, just tell me and I will add them to the list.  This is the list as I see it right now.  I think the GameCube one is pretty much complete, and the PS2 has all the ones that I was keeping an eye on.

I guess its because developers feel that the PS2 demographic  is the RPG demographic no the GCN.... Its a shame too cause both GCN and X-Box have few good RPGS.... IF you want good Rpgs you have to buy a PS2... I wish Camelot would help change that by making a GCN rpg.... Thank god for Namco huh?

Well, I'm personally not all that displeased with the GameCube's RPG lineup.  At this point in time, there's just as many GCN RPGs I want as PS2 RPGs.  The thing that I feel really makes the PS2 ever so much better in the RPG department, is that my beloved Xenosaga is an exclusive on that system.

Evolution Worlds is another RPG.   Isn't Namco working on 2 more RPG's for the GC that will be exclusive?

Yeah, but not a very good one.    I excluded many PS2 RPGs for that reason.

EDIT:  Namco's RPGs are Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia.  I am not aware of any others, and if there were any more, I wouldn't list them for the reason that nothing is known about them.  Kind of like Knight N' Knight (Sega Overworks), and the GameCube Fire Emblem that's rumored to be in creation.

I suppose I could add Yu Gi Oh: Falsebound Kingdom though, as it looks like a pretty fine GCN RPG.

i am very pleased with the gc lineup of rpgs- the ones from namco look outstanding, and skies is great and is rumored to have a sequal in the works
ffcc looks like a great title for multiplayer
also- if you are really hungry for rpgs on the gc, buy a game boy player and get some of the excellent gba rpgs (golden sun, breath of fire, lunar legend)
yeah the ps2 is the main system for rpgs but not all of them have impressed me so much
i enjoyed xenosaga, dark cloud 2, and suikoden 3 a lot but not many after that- well star ocean 3 looks pretty kick ass
basically if these gc rpgs coming out this year do good and sell well- then we could possibly see even more rpgs for the gc
i call the big one bitey.
