Since Mafia seems to be gaining momentum on the forums again, let's get the second pillar of Forum Gaming back on track by launching Safe Words 9!

After having done some theme games for awhile, I want to mix it up by trying out an idea I mentioned way back when we first started playing this game and that was to have a new selection of words each round. Every game we've played, we've always kept whittling down the same ones over and over. While it could create some interesting tension based on certain choices, I've been curious to see what effect it will have on players and the game if the selection is fresh each time. As such, there is no real overall theme and the selection of words could be anything making a completely different theme each round.

I'll let sign-ups run for a week and then we'll start this game up Thu. Aug. 11, 2016. I hope you are able to join in.

Actually, I will give this game a theme. It will be a Jeopardy/Game Show theme. There will be a list of categories depending on the number of players. The person who chooses the bomb word that round will get to select the category of play for the round and the bomb word in it. I like it!

If you want to offer a prize, you are free to do so. oohhboy offered a prize in one game and he was just a player in it. Of course, if you want to wait for next game when you are the host and offer it then, that would be fine as well.

I'm up for a new game (though I plan on switching to a new name once Mafia is over). I just don't know how to play. What's the best thread to learn the rules for this game?

I guess I've never written an official explanation of how to play this game beyond the first sign-up thread. Maybe this is why we never see many new people sign-up. Well, for now, here's a repeat of what I posted in the first sign-up thread outlining the game:

"My thinking was that it might be fun to do something like musical chairs or hot potato. However, how can you do that without music and just text? Moreover, if you just have people posting things and the host/moderator of the game suddenly says stop, how do you know that the host was always planning to stop things at that point or if they are manipulating things so that certain people win and certain people lose? Well, clever son-of-a-gun that I am, I think I've stumbled on the solution.

The way the game will work is as follows. Let's say that 10 players sign up. (Which is asking a lot these days but a man can dream.) I will then post a list of 10 random words and the game will begin. The players who signed up will each choose one of the random words posted. The order can be determined by sign-up order or by randomly shuffling the names and getting a pecking order that way. Player 1 would then choose a word and post it. Player 2 would choose a word and post it and so on and so on. You can't choose a word that another player has already chosen. From the 10 words listed, 1 would be selected as a bomb or hot potato. The player who chooses that word would then be eliminated from that round and out of the game. The bomb word would also be stricken from the list."

From the remaining 9 words, another 1 of those words would be secretly chosen as the bomb word and the remaining 9 players would each select a word again starting with the next player in the rotation from where the previous round ended.

Make sense? It's really easy to figure it out once you start playing. Or just look up past Safe Words games in the Funhouse and read through a thread or two. I think you'll get it that way.
