Gonna buy a New XL tomorrow: IPS? Glasses?
« on: May 06, 2016, 12:52:42 PM »
Hello community,

I decided to buy a New 3DS XL, primarily for N64/SNES/GB nostalgia purposes. Also I am really curious about this supposed 3D effect.

So, obviously I've heard about the two different screen versions and as you can imagine I am very keen on getting an IPS one.
In fact I've already called a few stores around my area (Switzerland/Germany) and two of them agreed to let me open the box and have a look. Actually they did it themselves right away as I mentioned it, lol, so they seem pretty chill guys. However, I don't think I am allowed to turn it on (except maybe in one Saturn) and so I wanted to ask you more experienced guys if it is somehow possible to distinguish them when turned off? I heard one is supposed to be more greyish and the other pitch-black. I'll try to find the one screenshot again and maybe will edit it in later.

Another option would be to postpone this step and first order one on Amazon and then simply return it in case it's a TN. I'm 100% sure they'll let me send it back even if I opened it and turn it on, as they made a mistake in their description, although I am not gonna write what as I don't want to lose this option. :P

What do you think? Was anyone in a similar situation or knows more on those points?

Oh, and just a little side-question for all wearers of glasses... Do you guys play without them? I was thinking it might be a much better experience, but I think I'd have to buy the little version then, as this would require to hold it really close (shortsightedness). Maybe I'll try it out in one of the stores.

Anyway... Thanks in advance, I'm happy about any input.

I wear glasses due to short sightedness, I find that the 3D effect works better without glasses but on the other hand if it's too close to your face it won't work at all. So I suppose it would depend on how bad it is. The majority of the time for me personally though is spent lying in bed, glasses off, 3D off.

I don't know much about screens but I expect for one shipment to a store they would all be the same, although I'm not sure. Can't hurt to take a look though and it sounds like less hassle than getting one from Amazon and maybe having to send it back.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Apparently a lot of people with IPS top / TN bottom screens say that, while turned off, the main screen is darker / pitch-black and the secondary one a little bit lighter. Does anyone have a TN model to check or can confirm this?

Edit: Here are two photos of a confirmed top IPS / bottom TN model while turned off.

Curious to know if full TN ones might still look like this, although I doubt it.

I thought all New 3DS XL models had the IPS display and all New 3DS models didn't.  In that case, if you want the IPS screen, just buy any New 3DS XL.

Also, glasses are not a problem with the 3D effect...everything is very stable and consistent on the new models.

Actually no. There are many well documented units with all possible configurations, i.e. top IPS bottom TN; both TN; both IPS; top TN bottom IPS. The frequency seems to be in this order, with the first one being the most widespread.

Does it matter? It's not like the GBA SP where there's a huge difference between front lit and backlit units. The end result is probably no different from people freaking out because newer OG 3DS models displayed slightly warmer colors then launch units. The system will play the games you want regardless of any minor screen differences. But whatever, I'll leave you to it. I even formatted your images proverly so they show up on the forums.
