NO DISK error, all over again
« on: July 15, 2003, 05:03:12 PM »
I bought my cube used, so I should have expected problems.  And it's out of warranty, so I'm in an even bigger pickle as it were.
Anywho, in case you couldn't tell, I'm getting no disk errors.  Beyond the actual error, when I put a disk in, the laser head makes funny clicking noises (as though it were trying to move but can't) and I've noted that it's easy to move the laser head, as by accidentally pushing (it really was an accident, honest)
Anyone have a quick fix suggestion?  I had a similar issue with a CD player and fixed that easy enough, but I think it's a little harder to open the gamecube than a CD player.  Taking it to a repair shop is a last resort.

Thanks.

If the laser has been moved, you are in trouble. If the laser doesnt point in the right direction it wont reflect the light from the disk properly. I dont know how acurately it has to be alligned, but I doubt you could just move it around to fix it. Take it in to have it professionally fixed, or just get a new one with a free game or GBP.

If you really want to fix it yourself try this at your own risk. I found the info on ezboard.com

Gamecube Disk Read error.

Most Gamecube problems are from the annoying disk read error. Most times I come to find out it isn't the laser but the motor that is the problem. The laser will work fine but it the motor doesn't spin the disc then the gamecube can't read anything. (THEN YOU WILL NEED A NEW MOTOR) The motor is made by panasonic.

(Laser Problem) If there is a laser problem and your motor does spin, Take apart the console and unscrew the cd rom assembly from the gamecube. Turn the cd-rom over and there will be a metal sheild over the laser and the board that controls the motor voltages as well as the laser. There are four screws take them out. and lift slightly but not to hard. After the metal sheilding is off. There will be the motor and lens circuit (the darn thing that controls the motors and the laser) There should be atleast four screws on the board. When you unscrew that before you take it off. There will be 2 ribbon cables. One for the laser and one for the motor. After you do that the motor will be exposed and so will the back of the laser. I got you this far. Try to mess with the pot on the laser. just move it clockwise less then 2 degress. Then see how that works.

I was getting the same CD READ errors. Someone earlier had said something about the Cube overheating. This is what happened to mine and could be whats happening to yours. I kept my Cube up against the left wall in my Entertainment center blocking the air intake fan. Even though there is a little bumper on the side to stop you from fully blocking the vent, it still doen't give enough room to get the proper amount of air the Cube needs. The heat wears out the electronics in the cube until it can't read disks. There isn't a real fix for this and your best bet is to get a new cube.

The same thing happens on my Gamecube, about the crap with "AN ERROR HAS OCCURED, PLEASE TURN
OFF THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE AND CHECK THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL" or something like that or " THE
GAMECUBE DISC CANNOT BE READ", so when this message appears I usually open the cover and close it again, I have to use this big fan in my room facing the Gamecube's fan, heck I even sent Nintendo themselves an e-mail explaining my Gamecube's problem, and my brothers and I only have one last resort, and that is to sent it to one of their repair shops which is some far place in The Bronx ( since I live in Manhattan), but I really don't know what to do, you have any solutions to this and other Gamecube-based problems??,  Thanx

I had my GCN overheat once, but there was no disk read error, it simply shut itself off for no appearant reason. I left it off for ten minutes and moved it so that there was more room for the vents to circulate air and havnt had another problem. If it is a disk read error/ no disk error etc. Then I would think it would have to be a problem with the laser. Make sure that the disk is actually spinning since that could be a problem too. Other than that I dont think that there is an easy fix to repair or readjust the laser.

My GCN has been pretty good, I accidentally dropped it from about 54 feet when I was moving stuff around in my room. Then all I hear is Bang on the ground. But it still works fine. I guess I got lucky and mine was built good. I got it a launch and is is still going strong.
