Backwards Compatability Question
« on: July 12, 2003, 07:24:34 PM »
I am curious, if you have a system that is backwards compatable, like PS2 is, will old games benefiet from the better hardware.  I am not really talking about graphics, as much as I am slowdown.  If a game is designed to run at 60fps, but drops from time to time, usually do to lack of memory, would the slowdown be gone on the new system?

If the game has problems due to hardware (i.e. ram) then it should play smoother on the new system. But the new system will only emulate the other system in order to play the game, so it wont improve graffics or anything else like that. Bottom line, dont expect the game to play better, but it should play atleast as well.

A PS2 will up your poly count, and smooth your 2D images.  But it will not look NEARLY as good as running a PSX game on your PC with ePSXe and a hardware accelerated plugin.

The reason this works is that some PSX games had some pretty cool stuff done in the programming, but the console didn't really allow for the display of those images the way they were intended.  The resolution was pathetic, and the hardware lacked many features.
