Topic: Backwards Compatibility

I was just wondering how practical it would be for Nintendo to make their next console backwards compatible all the way back to the NES.  My thought is that their could be a cartridge slot on the console similar to the Game Boy Player, where NES, SNES, and N64 cartridges all fit (like how regular GB games can fit in the GBA slot).  I have no clue on how much this would cost nintendo, or how hard it would be.  I was wondering if anyone here new.  Just the thought of having a machine that could play all my NES games perfectly without me having fight to the system is awesome.

i dont know if being back compatible with n64 would work out well...it be easier just to release compilation games..or if Nintendo's next handheld is powerful enough put some ports on there(the i like the first one better). Backward compatability for gamecube titles would be nice next generation. Its not a must, but i beleive it will help out sales. For instance i would really love to get oracle of seasons for gameboy color..i have a gameboy advance...but i can still buy it. Ps2 has the ability to soup up the graphics of psx gamesj ust a bit. It be nice to add some things in games..though i think that be a bit harder to do.

It'd never happen... but if they went so far as to *make* it happen, it'd move so many consoles it wouldn't even be funny.

It wouldn't be expensive, either.  As technology grows and old parts become cheaper, things like this become easier and easier... with some of the necessary parts dating back a couple of decades technology-wise, I feel like an NES slot/SNES slot/N64 slot/Game Boy slot would be very cheap.

One thing you'd have to consider is the shape of the console.  Where would the slots go?  How much trouble would it be to integrate five systems worth of parts into one system?

It'd be wonderful.  Lots of people need a way to play their NES/SNES carts.
