How do lightguns work?
« on: July 08, 2003, 05:57:18 PM »
Can anyone tell me? I've always wondered the game knows where you're shooting on the TV without it having any sensors or anything. It doesn't make sense- it's as if it works on magic. How DO they really work?

Heh.  Nintendo owns a patent on that design.    I wonder if the other games that use such devices have to pay royalties to Nintendo?

I didn't know that, is this why we don't see light gun games that often?

The guy who started atari made the first lightgun for a game, that I know of.  So I think they can have different designs and be fine.  I seem to remember reading about Yamauchi having them in a business in Japan where they had a shooting range sort of deal with light guns.

Nintendo had brought up a chain of failed bowling centers and converted them to eletronic clay pigeon shooting ranges.

Thanks aio tsuki- that's a complicated device little device. You wouldn't think a simple ol' NES could run something like that.

I think it depends depending on the light gun. The NES Zapper send signals of some kind to the screen, which either recorded the shot as a hit or a miss. The signal to the NES
