Worrying fan wants to know!
« on: June 26, 2003, 08:13:35 PM »
Ok this is the seccond, or third time ive seen this rumor reported online. This time on the latest IGN Cube Mail. Supposidly the Nintendo-Microsoft relationship is a "Friendly" one, they dont see themselves as competitors more like 2 against the Big Bad Sony. Supposidly there are rumors of some sort of "parternship" according to IGN..... Is this hog wash?

I am thinking it is.  If you want to see my full reasoning, I think I started one such thread in the other systems forum.

Yes.  While Microsoft isn't as heavily invested in gaming and would probably love to "partner" with another company, it ain't going to be Nintendo.

Like Grey Ninja, I also posted comments about this on the other thread of the exact same topic.

Matt at IGN said it was more MS interested in it but, like Rick said, it wasn't going to be Nintendo. I think being on friendly terms with a competitor (no contractual obligations or anything) could really help bring down Sony, though- you know, united by a common enemy. If MS and Nintendo didn't try to compete with eachother on every level, they could focus their efforts on bringing Sony down to their level, otherwise it's going to be very difficult to even the playing field.

I don't think Microsoft has ever tried to compete with Nintendo directly. What nintendo is doing isn't where microsoft is going.

Like it or not here's the truth.  It is indeed a fact that Microsoft and Nintendo have an "unofficial" partnership.  They both hate $ony, and they both wan't different things.  M$ wants to steal sony's dream of a "digital living room hub" (think the new PSX) and Nintendo wan't to continue making great game systems.

At E3 this years I witnessed M$ employees in Nintendo's booth EVERY DAY.  There they were, hanging out with Nintendo employees, laughing it up.  Then, at the one after party I attended, M$ and Nintendo people were hanging around together again, this time getting drunk and laughing it up

Still, it seems that M$ may have more than just an "unofficial partnership" in mind.  Yesterday, Nintendo bought back millions of dollars worth of it OWN STOCK.  Why?  To prevent a hostile takeover by another company, probably M$.

I actually like the idea of M$ and Nintendo having a "Gentleman's Agreement."  The only game company I have ever hated is $ony.  It pleases me to no end to think that these two allies could very well destroy the playstation franchise during the next round of console wars.

And for those of you who think that can't happen, just remember, everyone thought Atari, Sega, and even Nintendo would always remain at the top of the industry.  This is the end for sony

I don't think that employees from both companies chatting at E3 necessarily means anything.  I mean, maybe they are neighbors or see eachother at the local McDonald's at lunch.  They are across the street from eachother.  And why is there so much emphasis on "bringing Sony down"?  I don't hate Sony and I wasn't under the impression that Nintendo hated them either.  Why can't 2 or 3 video game consoles live happily in the world together?  Until I hear Nintendo officially announce plans to work together with M$, that's when I'll believe it. .

"M$ wants to steal sony's dream of a "digital living room hub" (think the new PSX)"

When did the PSX sudennly become Sony's insertion piint into your household? It's a machine that's for enthusiasts only (as is evident by it's price). Sony doesn't expect it to sell near as well as the PS2, and it is NOT intended to revolutionize your living room.

"I don't think that employees from both companies chatting at E3 necessarily means anything."

Exactly- you may think that MS employees hate Nintendo employees and vice versa, but just because the companies they're working for compete doesn't nmean their employees do, and I'm sure many of them are good friends simply because of the fact they enjoy videogames.

I'm not saying that they would work together directly.  What I mean is that they are engaged in a "Gentleman's Agreement."  Nothing official, just two companies agreeing not to target each other directly.  Sort of like, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

As for the idea of "bringing down $ony."  Destroying your compitition is just inherent to the nature of big business.  It's like war, especially for a bloodthirsty company like M$.  It may not be like this for the more noble and honorable Nintendo, but I'm sure there is some serious resentment towards $ony.  Especially after sony took Nintendo's best ideas and made the psx.  Heck they even colored the damn thing gray so that it would remind people of Nintendo's ultra successfull systems.  Even the most popular games on psx, were ones that got their start on Nintendo systems.

I'm sure Big N would love to take a chunk out of sony's "backside."

This is rediculous.

Because two opponents have a similar goal against another opponent and share in their small victories, everyone thinks there is some kind of merger coming or what-not. This is really far out in left field.

Why would anyone believe this?

It's my opinion that if it did happen by some chance, MS would basically pocket Nintendo as a second party in the end. There would be too many conflicts over profit and decisions in my opinion. Bill Gates stated he wanted to compete in the video game market and that's what he's doing. Interest in Nintendo stems from the fact that he'd benefit largely from it. It would help him get closer to competing with the leader, Sony. That doesn't seem like a good environment to me for a partnership.

If it was going to happen like that, why not get it to happen with Sega? Sega would much rather be a subordinate on a console they can make some decisions on. Then they could pretend to still be in the console industry...

As said before, N has no gain from an alliance with MS. And this whole "my enemie's foe is my friend" is a giant mistake, as history had the opportunity to prove multiple times (Saddam Hussein, anyone?). N probably knows that MS will backstab them on such an alliance (see Sendo for precedent) and maybe would like to backstab MS itself.

That's the EXACT thing I read at IGN. I don't think it should happen though, I mean Nintendo has even sold Rare to Microsoft, how in the world could they have a partnership. I bet it's a different type of partnership than we are all thinking of. Maybe Microsoft will help design games for Nintendo or maybe even make graphics for it(That's the only benefit I see, because X-Box has great graphics)

I just hope it's not system or development wise

Cuz if it is!?!?!

I think this whole partership rumour thing started because M$ wanted to change to ATi chip thingos, and Nintendo were already using them, thus making it look like they were going to partner up!

What I think that what should happen is that Microsoft should buy out Nintendo, and give them the money they need to compete with Sony. Think about it! Microsoft has an endless supply of money, but lacks the games. Nintendo makes the best games, but does not have enough money to go far. It woul be more of "the brain and the bronz" theory. I really think that this should be the move that Ninteno should make with Microsoft.

Now that I think about it, I think that what would happen is that Bill Gates would grab everything that Nintendo has to offer, then just get rid of the company. But I do think that the problem still remains is that Nintendo still is in the console war with the least amount of money. Sony and Microsoft can always rely on other things, but Nintendo is only about games.

Wouldn't it be great if Nintendo made operatin systems and home electronics?  We would have a chance to buy quality products from Nintendo.  They would also make a lot more money that way.

Pretty soon we will see Super Mario Bros. 3 included with the Windows upgrade in the accessories/games folder in my start menu.  Then I might buy the cooperative effort.

I don't like the idea of MS and Nin carving out the niches for their own game consoles.  I just want to have 1 console that plays a good variety of games, i dont want an xbox to play FPS' and a gamecube to play Zelda.  I want a good variety on 1 box.

It might be interesting if ms made its "home entertainment hub" and sold it with the option of "including" nintendos next console with it integrated, or had architecture to hook up your nintendo unit through this.

I dont see it though MS just likes to ingulf everything it can.  I am very skeptical about an alliance, but on the other hand it might give us a wonderful product.   Who knows...
