The last black Wii U consoles are being permanently removed from Japanese store shelves.

This is confirmed via the Japanese website of Nintendo.

The family bundles, which contained games like New Super Mario Bros. U and Wii Party U, were the final ones to actively include black Wii U consoles as part of their sales pitch. These have been already discontinued and are joined by the regular white and black premium sets. The basic white set and a recently released premium white set, which includes Wii Sports Club, are the only two bundles available in the territory.

No word if this is a trend that will continue onto other territories.

Clearly Iwata recently watched The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, as he can now say "This is no more Wii U the Black. It is Wii U the White, who has returned from death!"

Seriously, it sounds like Nintendo's phasing out old hardware so they can announce a revision sometime soon, possibly one with internal storage or a constant NFC reader or something.

Maybe they are doing a redesign and have more white ones in inventory to get rid of.  I am curious to see what they have in mind and if the Gamepad is also changed.
