New Game from Smilebit
« on: June 19, 2003, 10:42:12 AM »
According to IGNCube Smilebit is making a horse racing game for both the Gamecube and PS2, and it is supposed to be the most realistic entry into the genre. Now maybe this is just me, but is anyone else pissed off that Smilebit gives the XBox Gunvalkyrie and Jet Set Radio Future, and for their first Gamecube game they make a horse racing game? THey'll probably blame it's poor sales on Nintendo and never make another Gamecube game.

Horse Racing simulation games are HUGE in Japan.  I doubt if the game will ever see a North American release, as it's just as you said.  Americans could really care less about a horse racing game.  It will make "Cubes fly off the shelves" in Japan though I am sure.

I think you know the game I mean

oh and dont forget the fact that smilebit gave the xbox PANZER DRAGOON ORTA...
i dont own an xbox so i am a little dissapointed i wont see those games on another system
hopefully this horse racing game will be a good seller for the gc so we can see some other smilebit games in the future

They did a horse racing sim on PS2 a couple years back, as well as a few games in the "Let's Make" series, and some J. League soccer games. It'll boost Japanese GC sales at least.

I was dissapointed too.  I know derby games are popular in Japan, but damn, I was hoping for something better than that.

Horse racing sims do have their audience, but having fallen in with PDO and JSRF, it kind of breaks my heart that we are not seeing anything at that level of creativity on the GC. Hopefully this won't be the only thing they give Nintendo.

Bashing horse racing sims when you've never played one is akin to calling the Gamecube kiddy without playing the games.

i've been meaning to play one myself. It's one of the few genres i've never tried myself. They're still wildly popular in Japan, and have a lot of fans outside of Japan.

I'm not much for horse racing itself, much less a game.  I'll admit it could be fun, but it's probably not my type of game.

Though racing Epona in OoT is not unenjoyable. . .

Hmm, let's see- I don't like horses, I don't like realistic racing games, I don't like 99% of arcade ports, and I don't like actual horse racing. Anyone who doesn't derive the natural conclusion that I won't like a horse racing game from all of this is either blind or stupid. What I DO like are just about all of Smilebit's other games and I'm a bit pissed we're not getting them.

Like you cannot understand why horse racing games are popular in Japan, I cannot understand why deer hunter games became popular in the US or why Moorhuhn stayed alive longer than its publisher...
