NFRIT 1st Round: Okami (2) v Mother 3 (7)
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:49:48 PM »
The nominations have been made, and now it's time for you to decide the most underrated game in the 15 year history of Nintendo World Report! Votes will be open for 3 days, so cast your vote and make your voice heard in the comments.

In the Hollywood region, it's #2 seed Okami v #7 seed Mother 3.

Okami: The last game from Capcom's legendary Clover Studios before Platinum rose from its ashes, Okami's 2008 Wii re-release brought the beautiful art style and tremendous adventure gameplay to the Wii, while adding in controls well suited to the Wii Remote's capabilities. And an IGN watermark, but we don't talk about that.

vs

Mother 3: No crying until the end. Because of its release situation, Mother 3 only exists in English on the back of one of the first successful, widely promoted fan translations. And it's a tragedy, since the tale Mother 3 tells needs to be experienced by any person who has enjoyed RPGs.

Meh... I love RPGs, played through about 3/4 of Mother 3 and got so bored I just never went back to finish. No regrets. The game is odd and the storyline is well-developed, but it just wasn't much fun for me.

So I disagree that it "needs to be experienced by any person who has enjoyed RPGs". Just like earlier entries in the series, it's an interesting release that will appeal to some more than others. If you've played older games from the series then you'll probably have a good idea whether Mother 3 will be your cup of tea.

(Of course, Okami has it's own problems. Pacing in particular is a bear at times - never worse than the lengthy tutorial you are forced to play through before starting - and horned in motion controls to dodge in the Wii version are disappointing. A match-up of two flawed gems here in my opinion.)

Okami is beautiful and I feel less flawed than some like ejamer think it is. Aside from one drawing issue (circles on the blossom trees) the game worked perfectly for me.

I'm hoping we can get the DS version re-released on the Wii U (or an all-out sequel).

...

To be clear, I thought the drawing controls on Wii were solid and prefer them to analog controls. It's only the waggle-to-dodge and pacing problems that disappoint.  So while I call both games "flawed", I wasn't trying to be overly critical. "Just short of a masterpiece" could also be used.

I never had a problem with the waggle-dodge or the pacing in the game. But I may just be more forgiving of those things than most folks.

The art style of Okami was beautiful, the game had a good sense of humor, the motion controls weren't perfect but they were generally good enough, and personally I thought it out-Zelda'ed Zelda.

I'm pretty "meh" on both games, but I decided on Okami.

A game with a wolf? That's gotta win right? Look how well Twilight Princess did.
