Are indie games the "New" 3rd party?
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:20:29 PM »
2014 is shaping up to be a great year for the Wii U, in house. The confirmed tittle include, DKC tropical Freeze, MK8, Bayonetta 2, x2 and others. For me, that's plenty. However I am quite aware of the appetites of the playing masses and the required versatility in genres. Other than Ubisoft, Sega and  few others, support is tatooine over the next 12 months. Except for one group.  Thanks to UNINTY, the amount of indie titles on the forefront for the Wii U is almost staggering. While a good many of these titles are platformers, there is quite the number of possible gems in this vast list:

This will not replace the GTA's and MGS of the world but thats not why you brought a Wii U is it? It is also insulation against a major gaming crash but thats another topic. What say you, is there a Minecraft hiding amongst the huddled masses of garageband style developers?

...staggering, you say? Not in the slightest. Maybe compared to the Wii, but not even close to the other systems and Steam.

I have never included Steam when talking Nintendo, and I still don't have a reason to. OF COURSE Steam has more indie titles, it's for PC after all. Comparing it to PS4/XB1 it has quite the jump on those systems, even if you compare the launch and what was announced in the first 12 months.

The PS4 and Xbox One came out two months ago. The PS4 has quite a few indies, no idea about the One, though. Wait a year for both systems before you can compare them to the Wii U.

I hope indies take over every platform, including the Roomba.

The key to winning this console generation will be to capture as much indie developer support as possible. If Nintendo could practically give the Wii U and 3DS to the indie developers then victory would be assured for them over their rivals. Nintend needs to take all the necessary steps to insure that indie developers feel welcomed on Nintendo platforms.

Why is it when the Wii U has a positive vs. ps4/xb1 its wait and see.  When the it's something negative it's "well the Wii U is a failure look how much time they had" and the likes. The fact of the now is the Wii U has a huge advantage in the indie developer area. Almost every kickstarter has a Wii U stretch goal BEFORE PS4/XB1. Nintendo went hard for the indie community. There is no need to wait to compare, now is the battle.

Nice hyperbole, buddy. They don't have a fucking advantage. The process of developing is the same in all three consoles, and the other two have only been out for two months. I don't care what "other" people say, I would have said the same if the Wii U had been out for the same time and when had compared them to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Which part of my statement was hyperbolic? Since I didn't wanna talk outta my ass I did a bit of checking and I found out that it's easier(Nintendo partnered with the company)  to produce a title using Unity on Wii U than it is for PS4/XB1, hence the reason the stretch goal and the likes are first. Is that not an advantage?

120+ Indie games being made for Wii U
http://nintendoenthusiast.com/article/120-upcoming-wii-u-games-indie/

It's all organized by category with pics and short summarized descriptions
The list isn't perfect, missing a game or 2 & including some that aren't actually Indie, but it's a nice compilation either way.

Nintendo really needs an indie direct (or something) to highlight some of this stuff in detail. There are some nice games coming out between now and Mario Kart 8. Nintendo seems strangely quiet. I guess i got used to having a ND every 40days or so.

There are several interesting looking games on that list.  It seems like almost none of them have release dates, though.  Is that just that indie games are usually that way since they're digital releases, or a sign that a fair amount may never see the light of day?

This title makes no sense. It's like saying, Are Border Collies the new Dogs?

Independent titles released by first party devices are by their nature third party.

I get what your saying. Remember all the third parties ten years ago? Them were the days

Actally microsofts indie program is the same as Nintendo's expect you also get unity for windows 8 and windows phone. Plus they plan to have the ability to turn any retail unit into a Dev kit.

But yeah for the Wii U indies are the new third party. Take a look at how mutant Mudd's did on the Wii U versus other platforms.

The Wii U's saving grace could be the indie developers. If Nintendo continued to create an environment where indie developers can flourish then they could very well make the Wii U the one place in the industry for indie developers outside of Steam on PC. The third party support on the Wii U is dying, but they could make the Wii U attractive by have a large catalog of digital content for their system. This is why the Virtual Console needs to be in full force on the system.

I imagine (hope to GOD) that this Nintendo Direct (2.13.2014) will focus more on the one area Nintendo seems to have right. instead, well get Cranky Kong in Mario Kart…wait we already do O.o

I've been burned too many times by indie games that are lauded as fantastic experiences, only to find myself bored/unimpressed when playing them.  I'm happy to have the options, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

With the exception of Octodad: Dadliest Catch.  I'm jumping right into that the second it releases on PS4.

Are indie games the new third party?

If we're going by the amount of coverage on Nintendo Directs then yes, they are.

Nintendo should just hand over the keys to the Wii U and 3DS to indie developers.

...

Largely agree with this. Indie games are a great thing to have available... but quality varies widely and rarely reaches "great" status (unless a game happens to hit a niche you particularly love). Options are good, but quality is king and indie games are a very mixed bag in that department.

It's not like there isn't a wide variety of retail game quality.

We just know that Mario 3D World will be good and ignore "Petz" and "Barbie's Horse Adventure" are to be ignored.

I don't know what to think about an indie game called "Nihilumbra."

Whenever "Indie developers" start producing games like Titanfall and The Last of Us, I'll stop calling Nintendo's "Third Party Support" non-existant
