Yes, it has been nearly TEN years now since Reggie Fils-Aime introduced himself to us.


He was about kickin' ass, about takin' names, and showed us how Nintendo was all about makin' games.


This was the Reggie we all remember.






The 2004 Electronics Entertainment Expo, during Nintendo's E3 press conference.


There was a fantastic reel in the beginning with all the new GameCube games that would be coming out over the next year.

The Nintendo DS was revealed for the first time here, too.


Iwata also announced the next home console, Revolution, what would later become known as Wii.




And of course what Nintendo's E3 2004 press conference is best remembered for.


"But before you leave, I'd like you to step inside, one, more world for Nintendo GameCube"


The stunning reveal of the Zelda game that everyone had wanted since GameCube was first revealed at Space World 2000. The Zelda that would become Twilight Princess.

I remember when asked about the DS launch lineup and the title he said he was most impressed by was some Spider-Man game.  I remember that actually created some minor hype for that title but it sucked.  Gee, the Pizza Hut guy with no videogame experience picks the licenced title as his favourite.  It's the corporate pick.  The one you make because you know that's Spider-Man's big so having him on the box might sell the game.

Yeah, easily my favorite E3.

I bought a GameCube that year and a DS early  the next year (my first Nintendo handheld ever) all because of E3 2004.

Twilight Princess would later become my favorite Zelda of all time. I bought the Wii and TP day one at launch. Then bought the GameCube version 3 weeks later, the day it arrived at GameStop.  I loved that game, both versions.

I fully expect Zelda Wii U to be announced at E3 this year, but I'd be surprised if it came out sooner than Q4 2015. That said, while it'll be nice to see the game in action, I will temper my excitement. Both Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze got delayed. I hate getting hyped up about a game then seeing it pushed back. I advocate delays because it likely yields a better product, but you know, it's still excitement blue balls.

I still like it better than just having no clue what's on the horizon.  So often with Nintendo I feel I'm wondering just what the hell they're working on.  There is a certain fun in the anticipation of a game and Nintendo doesn't get that.  Plus all their secrecy is a little embarrassing.  How full of yourself do you have to be to think that people will rip off your Donkey Kong Country game?

At this point it would probably make a lot of sense for Nintendo to announce Wii U projects earlier than normal, just to provide some assurance of the console's future.  There are people who will buy a console for games in development that grab their interest.  Maybe this game is three years away but it looks so cool that people think "I better hang on to my Wii U" or "I better keep up with Wii U news so I know when this game comes out."  Existing fans can deal with downtimes by thinking "hey, at least we got that game coming up".  It keeps people talking.  It keeps Nintendo in the gaming news.  It keeps the Wii U relevant even in droughts.

I'd prefer to be surprised. I liked that Donkey Kong Country Returns came out of nowhere and released like six months later. Personally, I don.'to need to know about a game until it's almost finished. Since that's probably not an option with Zelda Wii U as Nintendo already announced it's coming and they need a major Zelda-esque title to show that might as well be Zelda this E3, I will temper my excitement accordingly.

This thread has inadvertently reminded me how diverse the Gamecube library was Vs. Wii. I mean that e3 video shows a vast amount of titles over several genres. I mean, that little purple box was rock solid. I've always said that the Top 20 games on GameCube or as good or better than either the xbox1, er first xbox or the PS2.


If the Wii U is another GC than A happy gamer is me.

Interesting. I'm the opposite, the Wii has way more variety than the GameCube. I guess variety is in the eye of the beholder.

I'd argue the first party GameCube lineup was a lot more diverse than the Wii's, but if you factor in third parties the sheer number of Wii games gives it the edge.

I felt the Gamecube had more variety.  The Wii third party support was borderline useless.  Mostly just shovelware trash designed to earn a quick buck off of the casual audience.  It never felt like anyone took it seriously and had any respect for its audience, like third parties didn't think of it as a "real" videogame system worthy of their "real" games.

Mad World, Okami, Muramasa, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Lost in Shadow, Bit.Trip series, Conduit 1 and 2, GoldenEye don't count as variety? What kind of third parties were on the GameCube that were more varied than that?

Well, it didn't help that my Wiimote smashed my T.V. screen so I couldn't make out what I was even playing most of the time. Of course, all I had to do was just shake the controller like an overly-hyper and sugared up 5 year old and I could still beat the games anyways. LOLOLOLOLOL!

I was raised with the Sega Master System and Genesis during the late 80s. The first Nintendo products I purchased were the Super NES (packed with SMW) at Toys 'R Us, and Pilotwings at Babbage's, at the very end of August 1991.  So when I did eventually get a Nintendo system, I got it at launch, day one.


A Link To The Past was the first Zelda game I ever played. Loved that experience, and it made me a Zelda fan too.

Twilight Princess and the first Super Mario Galaxy are my favorite 3D entries in those series.
