Thinking of getting PS4...
« on: January 22, 2014, 01:26:47 AM »
Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a PS4 to compliment my Wii U, however I'm not sure, it's a thought.

I know Sony has some good first party games and exclusives and third party support. So how big of a difference is there really between the PS3 and PS4? Graphically and their functions and UI?

Is it really noticeable?

Yes, it really is, though with launch games you'll notice it more subtly than you will in about a year or so. Probably the best video I can find to demonstrate this is the IGN comparison video between the PS3 and PS4 versions of Tomb Raider:

And yeah, there's a HUGE difference between the UI on the PS3 and that on the PS4, though they're based on similar ideas.

I'm familiar with the ps3 as I owned one, just curious how the ps4 was. I've seen one on craigslist for $500 for killzone, cod ghosts, bf4, need for speed with system in like new condition. Most stores seem sold out or have overpriced bundles with stuff I can live without.

I never have time to play mine, but I would get it if you want a console for third party games (and some exclusives). Battlefield 4 is essentially the PC version. As long as you have a decent-sized 1080p TV, you'll notice a huge difference in visual quality over the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Xbone.

Yeah, have a 65" Rear projection HDTV 1080p in the frontroom, and a 46" Flat LCD 1080p in the bedroom.

Just think the $500 sounds good for the system and the games, just considering it.

Just hate how Gamestop or really anywhere are trying to sell bundles with Vita and stuff you don't want for $600 to $800 ugh.

Does the PS4 play 3D blu ray like the PS3?

Not yet (to be fair neither does Xbone). Supposedly Sony will be launching a 3D VR headset or something soon, could be related to why they've held off. If you like those games, then go for the bundle. Pretty good deal (given current prices).

What I've been told is that currently the PS4 does not do 3D at all.  I'll probably test that sometime this week since I have several 3D Blu-Rays.

Honestly, I got the PS4 and launch and moved my PS3 to the bedroom.  To tell you the truth its a terrible PS3 replacement.  I just wait till it gets more mature or has a game your just dieing to have.

The PS4 does not have DLNA Support or a large selection of games.  The controls are a little switched on Movies.  I'm going to check for the 3D stuff later.  The biggest thing the PS4 has going for it is Vita Support and the PS4 Controller with a Coveat.  I like the controller.  I do not like that the PS4 does not allow the controller to go into a low power mode really when your watching Netflix.  I seem to get the same battery life playing a game as I do just watching movies.  The voice commands can be cool and so is the streaming.

In the end without BC the PS4 is a Side/Downgrade to the PS3 considering what your using it for.

PS4 supports 3D games, there just aren't any on the system yet. Battery life on the controller is pretty inexcusable though.

Alrighty, I broke down and bought a PS4, with an extra controller and 3 months of PS plus and BF4. So far I'm liking it, looking forward to Infamous: Second son and Metal Gear Solid V and whatevers on the horizon.

My weaknesses for PS4 right now are Drive Club and MLB The Show.  I loved the MLB games on PS3 and hearing that they'll be implementing a way to carry your franchises/players through different iterations of the games just makes me wet.  We haven't heard much about Drive Club, but some of the footage that's been trickling out is looking really nice.  If the game turns out well, and supports my wheel, it'll be a must-have.

I'm curious to know how BF4 is on PS4, now.  The game launch was a mess across all platforms, and I eventually gave up on it on PC.  I hear DICE are running some sort of stress test(post-launch stress test, WTF?), so I assume some of the rubberbanding/lag issues are still prevalent.

Hard to say, but my brief time online with it seems promising, it ran and looked great on PS4, and that's on a 65" widescreen rear projection tv 1080p. It definitely looks crisper and higher poly than last gen versions. I haven't seen any of the bugs that has plagued it. I heard Sony was helping EA to fix the problems with it. I know there was a recent patch, maybe that dealt with most of the bugs. It's fun, I'm liking it more than CoD: Ghosts.

I love the benefits of PS+ with the PS4 and PS3, downloading Uncharted 3, Shadow of Colosus, DmC, Bioshock Infinite, Boarderlands 2 for free :) seems worth it, been wanting to try those games out. If you want to add me my s/n is Jace2279 :) I find voice commands on PS4 to be a neat feature.

Yeah, PS+ is pretty great. I'm in the process of downloading Outlast on PS4. I still can't believe how Sony are able to pull off getting great games like Resogun, Don't Starve and Outlast on to PS+ as they're released. It's pretty awesome for those who subscribe to the service.

I'll add ya later.

I just set up PS+ on my PS3. Instant game collection is pretty nice (Bioshock Infinite, Devil May Cry, Uncharted 3, LBP Karting, a couple more I can't remember). I also just got Don't Starve for PS4 (free for PS+)...I have no idea how to play it.

lol, yeah, at first Don't Starve can be pretty obtuse. I'll probably never dig into the full depth of that game, but it's a super interesting game. It's highly stressful, has a really oppressive atmosphere, and there are so many ways to die. It's a game that I respect but I don't think I'll ever love it.

Yeah I only played it at like 12:30am right after it downloaded (I am impressed that downloads on PS4 and Xbone are both much faster than their predecessors, especially the painfully slow PS3), and died like 3 times.. I chased some rabbits and then found carrots but then things killed me in the dark.

It's noticeable, but there's really nothing out right now that screams "must buy" unless you're simply NEEDING a new console right now. I mean, the only thing that interests me is Infamous, and that's not out for another month. Hardly worth getting a system for one game. I'm sure Sony's first-party studios will put out great games, but currently they are not offering anything that personally appeals to me. Maybe it's different for you, though.

I want one as well. I have to buy a new blu ray player and wondering about getting a ps4. The library at the moment is nothing special for me but I also don't want to buy another ps3, or do I?
