Was going to pick up 3D World tomorrow evening, but realized tonight that it was available midnight eastern, and promptly started downloading (goodbye W101 trade-in credit and future 3D World trade-in credit).
An hour later it was installed and I jumped in. Played for two hours straight in a sort of serotonin haze. So many smiley little elements it's almost overwhelming.
Initial notes:
-Catsuit really does feel like the cape and raccoon tail of old: you feel naked without it in most situations.
-It can be a little hard to judge distances, I can see where a 3D effect would have been useful on the 3DS forebear.
-It doesn't look quite as super pretty as I was hoping (so far), but goddamn is the soundtrack good.
-Happy for a cumulative 3D moveset sans waggle boost. They even included the propeller spin! (Long jump feels a little sticky to pull off, though)
-I'm usually pretty OCD about catching as much stuff as possible as I go along, but the level timers have several times now made me go "**** it, I'll just see if I can make it to the end before the buzzer" which has definitely loosened up my play style and kept me more in the momentum of the game's design. (Might be a pain in the ass later, though.)
-I haven't played 3D Land, but this game almost feels like Nintendo challenged themselves to make a 3D Mario game as if Mario 64 had never happened. Beautiful and fascinating result. I think they should do a similar Zelda challenge, pretending OoT was never born. (You could say that Other M was a similar experiment, RE: Prime, except with terrible results.)
