Welp. Mario 3D World is apparently on backorder nationwide here, and I don't see Shop of the Future making it up to me with $60 in eShop credit.

So I guess it'll be Link Between Worlds first... whenever that gets here.

Was going to pick up 3D World tomorrow evening, but realized tonight that it was available midnight eastern, and promptly started downloading (goodbye W101 trade-in credit and future 3D World trade-in credit).

An hour later it was installed and I jumped in. Played for two hours straight in a sort of serotonin haze. So many smiley little elements it's almost overwhelming.

Initial notes:

-Catsuit really does feel like the cape and raccoon tail of old: you feel naked without it in most situations.

-It can be a little hard to judge distances, I can see where a 3D effect would have been useful on the 3DS forebear.

-It doesn't look quite as super pretty as I was hoping (so far), but goddamn is the soundtrack good.

-Happy for a cumulative 3D moveset sans waggle boost. They even included the propeller spin! (Long jump feels a little sticky to pull off, though)

-I'm usually pretty OCD about catching as much stuff as possible as I go along, but the level timers have several times now made me go "**** it, I'll just see if I can make it to the end before the buzzer" which has definitely loosened up my play style and kept me more in the momentum of the game's design. (Might be a pain in the ass later, though.)

-I haven't played 3D Land, but this game almost feels like Nintendo challenged themselves to make a 3D Mario game as if Mario 64 had never happened. Beautiful and fascinating result. I think they should do a similar Zelda challenge, pretending OoT was never born. (You could say that Other M was a similar experiment, RE: Prime, except with terrible results.)

Well, now with Mario and Zelda finally out of the way, now we can finally expect to see F-Zero and Starfox and the like at E3 2014, an event that Nintendo will totally show up at this year!

I think I voted that I was going to get Zelda. But Mario got better reviews and I remembered I had $30 of credit on my Wii U eShop.

So far, I like it a LOT!

I ended up with both games due to the Toys 'R Us sale, but I'm playing Super Mario 3D World first as expected. This has really been an excellent year for gaming despite containing an unlucky number.
