Well then why don't we change this into the pros and cons to each in reference to games already out on the Gamecube.

Lost Kingdoms- RT

This doesn't have to be a poll.  It's quite easy to get a discussion going on this topic.  The problem is that the original poster didn't give a thoughtful opinion beyond "I like this better." thus resulting in a poll.

I find that in most games real time is usually superior to turn based.  I would much rather play a game than watch it.  Most RPGs put me to sleep because of the amount of inactivity.  However that doesn't mean in all situations real time is better.  Real time for the sake of real time is stupid if the game works better with turn based gameplay.  I think that turn based RPGs would just be a lot more interesting if they included more real time interaction.  It often makes sense for the battles to be turn based but not necessarily everything.  My favourite RPG is Super Mario RPG because when I'm not battling I can move virtually anywhere in the game and I can jump and interact with my surroundings.  Compare this to most RPGs where the background is a prerendered picture and there's a lot of restriction towhere you can go and what you can interact with.  Most RPGs feel like you push a button and then the character does something after a pause instead of doing it as the button is pushed.  The ideal situation is something that basically plays like Zelda but with experience points and turn based battling.

The worst is something like active time battles where they take the worst features of both systems and combine them.  What's the advantage to having turn based fighting when I can't stop and think about what I'm doing?  The whole advantage to turn based fighting is that I don't have to worry about enemies beating my ass between attacks.

Both!  They both have their own merits, it just depends on the game.

Some real time action combined with the upgradable elements of turned base RPG's would be sweet.  Like Diablo, the only problem is sometimes the battles come down to hitting the A button 24/7.

Real-time.  I love Zelda.  Plus, turn-based gets repititive if not done right, which in almost all cases, is not IMO.

Real time rules.
I play Final Fantasy, and the battles are *yawn*..so..*Termin8 falls asleep*

*wakes up*
Sorry bout that.

Pokemon is the only exception for me so far.
But I still wish it was in real time.
The only way you could make turn based battles in real time is if you can call out (or press buttons) to shout your commands in real time.
Like I've said in the Pokemon threads, being able to quickly counter your enemy's attacks or dodge them is sooo much better than having the computer say whether it hit or missed.

Final Fantasy 7 is one of my favorite games. I think turn based is really good. I also like adventure real time games like zelda/diablo etc. I guess it depends on the game. I would really like to see Pokemon RPG as a turn based game (assuming it ever comes out )

Turn based can get boring at times, but real time games where you run up to someone hit and dodge a few times and move on (ala Diablo0 can get boring too.

I have no preference.  I play both just as fine.  I must say that the ATB system is quite nice though, as it combines elements of both.  I guess since my favorite RPGs are turn based, I will say turn based though.  (well, ATB, but most of you would say that would be turn based)

Tales of Phantasia was pretty fine though, and that was real time...

The only problem with Real time is the number of characters you can control at a time (one), and sometimes if the characters AI isn't up to snuff you may find yourself cursing.

I accually prefer games that accually blend the two, like Star Ocean.

i personally like both but i do prefer turnbased for most rpgs
games like zelda need to be realtime because of the nature of the series
i dont mind turnbased battle systems like ff or skies, but i like when the blend the two as well as blkpaladin said
star ocean is good, as is the tales series
but a battle system i adore and think is one of the best created is the grandia series battle system- if you played any grandia games you know what i mean- it mixes turn based and real time
other good battle systems are chrono trigger's and especially (again one of my favorites) valkyrie profile
real time gives you more control but some rpg battle systems give you good depth as well
i call the big one bitey.

Like others, i agree that it depends on the game.  Zelda is about adventure and exploring so it would be quite annoying to be stopped every 5 seconds and wait for the battle screen to come up and fight a moster by taking turns or waiting for a time-counter to go down then watching a little "yey i won" scene then seeing what items you got, with the whole process taking 5 min or more.  The fun about games like final fantasy is building up your character to see what new spells or abilities they have...so yea, even though that whole battle process takes a while, its exciting to see how much experience you have and how close you are to the next level and so on.

However, when it comes to turn-based or ATB, I prefer turn-based because you only have to wait for your enemy to make their attack in turn-based games while in ATB you have to wait for the counter to drain......boring.
it was time for a change.

The chrono trigger battle system has one annoying flaw. The positions of the emnemies dicting what kind of area attack you can use making a good number of spells nearly unusable.

My favarite type would be the tatical RPGs. Well most arn't considered true RPGs, they have all the battles with out wandering the over world all the time. An excellent exampl of this would be Squares Front Mission 3 on the PSX. Front Missions pervious incrantions were lacklaster and unrefined.

About ATB I think it's good when the menus aren't confusing. FF8 took too long to issue orders, that way you couldn't really give complex orders without loosing like 20s time. In FF5 the menus had much less "layers", it took just a few secs to give the order (and I think time was held while you were giving orders).
Grandia (2) was nice, but too easy. I didn't notice much of a challenge, though it was fun to counter ALL of Tio-clone's attacks.
But all in all I prefer real time. You can make more interesting boss battles and actually evade an attack.

What I really hate are zoom-battles, especially the random kind! They break your flow, they need unnecessary time and you always try to keep movements as straight as possible to keep the number of fights low.

First of all i can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned advanced wars

Second, Pokemon would be better as a turn based game for GBA anywayz.  These are some of my ideas to improve the current Pokemon GBA games though.  First, adding a defense option like when one person is choosing an attack the other could select a counter such as if a mankey tried a special punch then a fearow could use whirlwind and have a 25% chance of countering the attack for example.  Or if a Raichu used agility and it was able to work as a counter to a charizards flamethrower attack then both players choose a direction of attack or counter and if the directions they choose are the same then Raichu is hurt and if the directions are different then Charizard misses.  And then have the terrain effect the fights better such as if water is near by some pokemon can't try to counter in the direction of the water and others have an increase in countering or an added attack power.

Kinda neat idea i think anywayz.  what do u guys think?
Patend Pending, lol

Advance wars is not a Tatical RPG. It is a TBS. Front Mission is a Tatical RPG because you could upgard your mechs to urber levels and your charaters learn how to use thier weapons more effectively. Some say WC is an RPG, but it isn't. It is a RTS with a vetern system for heros.

Ok, I just thought I would mention a few things:

Zelda is an Adventure Game, NOT an RPG
Final Fantasy Tactics/Advance Wars/Fire Emblem are SRPGs, and bear few similarities to traditional RPGs.
Diablo is an RPG... but not of the console sort.

And whatever Advance Wars is, thats my favourite. I like both of them actually, Pokemon is a great turned based game and Diablo 2 is a great real time game. I like all RPG's, as long as thier good.
