GI being idiotic to nintendo
« on: June 08, 2003, 06:55:04 PM »
Ive been defending Game Informer for a while but now there just really bugging me.  Aside from saying metroid prime is going to suck and then give it like a rating of 9 or so, there actions lately just got me mad.  First they write off mario party 4 (they gave it a 5)which is actually a pretty good game, but it was in small print below that they told us that they had it out for this series from the start(not many people read that far down, opposed to the main article).  Then in this issue it basically said someone should sue nintendo for there horrible games like wario ware Inc.  While most other gamins sources gave it a high rating(Gamespot.com gave it a 9.1) and it looks really fun and im proably going to buy it.  Then when I looked at the charts for the writeup under Pokemon sapphire they said something like "all good things comes in three's while pokemon has always come in two's.  No it hasn't!  this is the first installment that didnt have the third game(there was blue, red, and yellow, then came gold, silver, and crystal).  I didnt get it take a good look at this month's game pro but it looks like they have a wopping 1 review!  So it may not just be GI thats dissing the cube.

Don't like their stuff? Don't read it. Simple.

Reviewers are entitled to having opinions, too. That's their job, they give you their opinion on a game.

they sound pretty daft and not worth the money of purchase if they say things like Metroid Prime is going to suck, i only buy dead tree editions when i have nothing else better todo at lunch (gameboy left at home or needs recharging)

Unfortunately most gamers use the mags to make game buying decisions without trying them out.  To me it's quicker and easier to do this.  However, GI has been crap from the get-go.  I had a subscription when they first came out, they sucked then and they suck now.  That's back when they were, well kinda still are, the pawns of Gamestop.  They wanted to sell the games so every game got a good score so people would buy from them.  Shows were they're integrity is.  Gamepro tends to be the pawn of whatever system is the current trend setter.  Used to be PS2, now they're down for the X-box.  Don't worry, they're so wishy-washy they could be praising the 'cube next month or be the next Nintendo consules biggest supporter.

I just go for the most impartial mag out there.  Right now, EGM and GMR tend to be fairly good.  I own a PS2 as well, so when cross platform games come out, I wanna know which is better without renting and comparing side by side.  I knew something was up with Lamepro when the X-box port of what they determine to be total crap on PS2 and GCN get a nearly perfect score.   Gotta keep an open mind on things like this.  Problem is to many people just blindly believe what these mags have to say.

I like Gi, I got a subscription from gamestop for just $5, so far they've provided me with some good info, never mean to Nintendo. IMO Tips & Tricks is the best gaming magazine ever created. Nintendo Power is also cool, man I need money.

Game Informer, is the most biased anti-Nintendo publication out there.  It's nothing more than a 200 page add for $ony.
Even the best and most important Nintendo games are only given token "lip service" and mediocre reviews.  They did this to Dreamcast as well.  Meanwhile, the worst $ony crap (like Socom), get hailed as the "greatest game ever."  Whatever, G.I.   Of course why do you think they sell it so cheap?   I don't really think that people would buy it otherwise.

G.I. is good for one thing however, wiping you A$$

A GI writer in our midsts?  Bring him on!  I would love the hear one of these corporate shills try and defend themselves.

Also, are you refering to bobby.b?  Instead of "Billy.b"  Isn't he this boards resident $ony publicist, um I mean, gamer, whatever....

Anyway, GI folks, just bring it

Ahh, now this kind of thing is something I wanted to talk about for a long time. Magazines. Unfortunately they come in many kinds of styles, pretty much like websites. The way they write varies, the way they rate games varies, but ultimately they all have one thing in common and that's that they will write anything for the money.

I used to work for the Greek version of GamePro (yup, there's a Greek GamePro believe it or not) and for the Greek Playstation Magazine and I did some reviews for some PC gaming mag. They were all published by the same company. Anyway, even though most of the news, reviews ect were merely translations of the english and american texts some games were reviewed and the people who worked there I must say weren't gamers (OK maybe one or two and two more PC gaming dudes that were convinced that strategy games have 'depth'). To give and example, the editor of the Playstation magazine (my 'boss') was a woman who didn't even know what a game looked like. Sure I know that this is not the case with american and british magazines but there was this one time when I was assigned to write a review of this stinking PSX game called Koudelka (do I have the spelling correct?). Anyway, the british PSM gave that waste of MB a 3/10, now I was asked to write a review giving the game a 8/10 because the publisher of the game had some deal going on with the publisher of the magazine (go figure), I was of course not going to get any extra pay but even if I was I wouldn't do it, first because the game sucked so badly that even a 3/10 was too good and second because I am ethical when it comes to games, simply because I love them and my interest is in the industry's wellfare and not into cheating poor 8 to 12 year-olds (who were to core readers of the mag opposite to the chief's beliefs, a read through the mail would convince anyone) to spend their parents cash for some bad game and even worse, cheating a child into getting a bad game and then letting it down and dissapointing it. I was guided into writing specific answers to childrens mail about how great the PSX was (and all this when SOny of Europe didn't give a rat's left butt cheak about the PSM while they held the Greek GamePro in high regard) and not give a more balanced opinion even if it still was in the PSX'x favor. I was made to respond to 8 year-olds as if they were 23, dissing them and being ironic when they asked a simple question showing so much trust and friendship towards the magazine they were writing to. I couldn't stand it so I got into a fight with the editor who was a pain in everyone's butt (even the owner of the publishing company hated her but she owned some stock of the company so the owner couldn't fire her) and I quit like a hero, pissing her off so badly that she even refused to give me references, but so what.

So, if this happens in a small country like Greece and to a small time mag that makes no difference to the world then just imagine what gives in all those other big mags.

There is also one more thing I'd like to mention. Has anyone noticed how much the attitude of gaming magazines and their quality has changed over the years. Seven or eight years ago, there would be plenty or mags and people in that buisness that were on the looks out for excellence in gaming, now they all seem to throw in a score for gameplay as if it corresponds to the number of buttons on the controller that are used.

Take my advice, read EGDE and FLEX hehe...

By Billy B he is refering to the founding father of PGC, Billy Berghammer. He is lead of the new Game Informer Online. And occastionally will have something in the mag as well.

Traditionally, I find 5-yr-olds and game boxes give much better reviews than Game Informer.

"Non stop action!"

"Amazing adventure!"

"Slick Matrix stuff!"
