Thoughts of a Pissed Off Nintendo Fanboy
« on: June 11, 2013, 07:45:37 PM »
Let's get something straight. I may be a pissed of Nintendo fanboy, but I'm not pissed at Sony or Microsoft. In fact, I'm very impressed by both companies, especially Sony. I'm pissed off at Nintendo. The year when they needed to bring their A game, when both the Xbox One and PS4 were getting unveiled, they dropped the ball completely. Sure, there were some highlights in the presentation, such as Smash Bros. the eShop reel, and Donkey Kong, but it does nothing to stand up to the PS4 and Xbox One.

The first thing the company showed off was Pokemon X/Y, one of the only exclusive 3DS games that was shown at the Nintendo Direct. As expected, the game look good, but didn't do anything to elevate the Wii U or really help Nintendo today. The new "fairy" type looks desperate, and kinda childish, and the new playtime with Pokemon mode looks a lot like Nintendogs, Pokemon style. Hopefully this won't take up a large portion of the game, and I don't really care for it. I will be buying the game, but we didn't need it taking up time at an already short conference.

Next up was Super Mario 3D World. Honestly, I didn't think I'd be so little excited about a new Mario game. I love Mario, but 3D land was just okay for me, nowhere near the caliber of Galaxy, or any other 3D Mario games. I'll probably buy the game as well, but I was looking for more. One thing I really enjoyed was the music, though. The jazzy tunes were really nice and I hope that the full soundtrack is this good.

Mario Kart also looked just okay to me. I just picked up Mario 3D Kart, and to me the game seems too soon. I don't know how driving at a 90 degree angle will work out, and I don't know if it will even change up the gameplay that much. I'm hoping for much deeper communities in this version, but I'm also not very excited for this one either.

The two games I cared least about were Wii Fit U and Wii U Party. Honestly, being a pretty hardcore gamer, I couldn't care less.

Nintendo then showed off its 3rd party reel. I wish that the Wii U was getting some sort of exclusives, at least in regards to DLC, as most 3rd parties have either left the Wii U entirely or not caring about the Wii U with their versions. Come on Nintendo, you have billions in the bank! You can afford to bribe some third parties! Wave some fees, fund some game (like The Wonderful 101 or Bayonetta), and get your **** together. Third parties are looking at the Wii U as a joke, and it's YOUR job, as the console manufacturer, to fix this. Microsoft and Sony both get it (Microsoft less so in terms of online), but you need to pick this up.

The highlight for the conference for me was the indie reel. All these exclusives, or console exclusives, are really impressing me. It's great to see that Nintendo is going after these indies, but Sony is doing more. Compete directly with them on the indie front! This is one place where you can compete well! Give these indies money! That's the biggest thing they need! Publish these games, and for heaven sakes, allot some more time to it during your press conference. It was a large part of Sony's press conference, but it should've been a bigger part of Nintendo's!

Wind Waker looked okay. Just, meh. Honestly, the game didn't look as good as I was hoping for graphically. It doesn't look like a large improvement over the Gamecube version. And that's not just my impressions being blown away ten years ago, I played through the game within the last year. The HD port doesn't look like a huge improvement, and I'm still not sold.

Another highlight from the trailer was Donkey Kong. I loved Donkey Kong Country Returns. I enjoyed the challenge, level design, and background/foreground features. The game looked great and I cannot wait to play it. Not the massive surprise I was looking for, but Donkey Kong isn't bad by any means.
Nintendo didn't give us much Bayonetta, but for what they did show us, it looked solid. I'll probably enjoy it, but we don't know much about the game currently. I also enjoyed Iwata's subtle sexual reference/joke.

Monolith's X looked amazing. I'm not necessarily talking about the gameplay, as we haven't seen much, I'm talking about the game's graphics. Honestly, I feel like X is the only game shown so far that can compete with the PS4/One graphically. I'm intrigued.

The best part of the conference, in my opinion, is the Smash Bros. trailer, of course. Villager was very strange, but looks fun to play with. Mega Man was the real highlight. Multiple abilities and awesome moves were featured, and I cannot wait to try Mega Man out. I'll probably be picking up the Wii U version, but may pass on the 3DS one.

Overall, Nintendo's conference was mediocre, average. They couldn't stand up at all to Sony and Microsoft at all, which is what they needed to do most at this E3. Nintendo needed to prove that the Wii U is a must-own console, and they failed to do so this year. Notably missing from the Nintendo Direct was Zelda and Sonic. I would've liked to see more, and most of the games shown didn't impress me. I love Nintendo, but they're not doing it for me right now. They need to get their **** together, show me stuff I want, and make some new IPs. It wouldn't hurt to buy a cloud service either, as like the Xbox One, the Wii U needs to be able to get more powerful as time goes on.

I am so pissed that Star Fox and the myriad of third party games were not announced for the Wii U.

Ok, while I can certainly understand some of your complaints, as I agree Nintendo's E3 presentation was mostly underwhelming, I have a bone to pick:

I'm pretty sure I read an article explaining why the notion of using cloud services to improve graphical output is mostly bullshit marketing jargon (of course I can't find the article now).

I'm starting to wonder if we'd all be more surprised/satisfied if they had never mentioned any of these games existing prior to E3.  They may have ruined our expectations by already mentioning these games were in the works (besides Donkey Kong) in the earlier Nintendo Directs.

Bah. People complain about E3 every year it seems.

Watching that 2002 E3 NWR posted Monday may just be one of Nintendo's best E3 presentations ever. GC had launched with Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion which were two new franchises. It had Smash Bros. Melee out, the top seller for the system. Rogue Squadron was a solid 3rd party title. Sonic was now appearing on a Nintendo console in the form of Sonic Adventure 2. Of course, people still weren't satisified with most of those efforts. And then at E3, they showed Mario Sunshine, Windwaker, Metroid Prime, Starfox Adventures, F-Zero GX, Eternal Darkness, Wario World and others like the next Mario Party or GBA games and so forth.

Most of those games are top notch A+ titles though not every game is for every person. Some people dislike some of those titles listed and prefer other iterations or nitpick things. But I think it can be agreed that pretty much most of those games are enjoyed by a vast majority of gamers and are high quality. Yet, even when these games were shown at E3, people complained about Zelda being cel-shaded or they complained about Metroid Prime become a FPS or who knows what else since I didn't come to these forums back then. Even when we look back at the past at good E3's and high quality line-ups, people still complained at that moment in time. It's bloody stupid and there are always going to be complaints.

I disagree with the first post, I think this years E3 was the best Nintendo was going to pull off. It wasn't enough to wow me yet but it was more than enough to keep my intrigued. I was so close to just writing Nintendo off for good and going PS4 only but Super Mario 3D World is the game that got me thinking okay don't count Nintendo out yet.

This wasn't their Best E3 yet but it wasn't their worst either, the one where they showed of Red Steel was painful to watch.

Wii Music.

Nintendo's 2008 presser is permanently and forever seared into my mind's eye. Seared like a hundred hot needles jammed up under my fingernails.

I missed that one, I had traded in my DS for a 1TB hard drive and sold my Wii by that time so I stopped checking into Nintendo E3 till this last one.
