In a developer interview on Nintendo's YouTube channel with Kensuke Tanabe, it was revealed that, in addition to Diddy and Dixie, there is still a third unannounced playable character.

Tanabe also detailed a new plucking and throwing mechanic, similar to Super Mario Bros. 2, and showed how plucking certain items can also be used to solve puzzles.

He also spoke about the new camera rotation present, which breaks from the series' tradition of using only 2D planes. This allows the camera to pan around as the player moves through the level to reveal new areas.

Tanabe's team wanted to use powerful water-focused animals in the game, which led to their choice of seafaring vikings as enemies. The game will focus on this water theme by having players hop from island to island as they progress throughout the game.

Given I hated the characters from dk64, I wouldn't mind going back to kiddie Kong.. Which is saying something because he irks me so much!

Honestly though, if they want to have a secret character.. Why not surprise everyone and make Cranky playable? Show those same whippersnappers how it's done! He'll be playable in pro mode, only 1 heart and he's gone!

Nintendo is building hype for this - so it's Kiddy Kong.  If Nintendo is building it up as a big deal it is almost certainly NOT a big deal and having the fourth playable DKC character in the game is the least surprising thing that could be done.

Donkey Kong with a tie is Donkey Kong Jr.

They're both named Donkey Kong. As such if Donkey Kong sr. had outstanding bills Donkey Kong jr. might get collections notices or not be able to apply for a mortgage.

Actually, Cranky Kong is the current Donkey Kong's GRANDfather (look it up). So modern DK is "Donkey Kong, III". DK Jr. would be modern DK's father, who has yet to appear in the DKC series... So as long as he's updated to be an adult, his inclusion as an additional character would NOT be a mistake.

But you do sorta have a point, as they DID screw it up once in the past and mistakenly called modern DK Cranky's son in DK64 (but you could always argue that Cranky is senile and just got confused). Nintendo has otherwise been consistent with their relationship as grandfather and grandson in all subsequent games, so they're likely aware of it enough not to overlook it again.

I'm really excited for this. If Retro felt thy had more to offer I welcome it. I just really don't want another Metroid from them afterward.


I am so glad Dixie is playable, she's one of my favorite Nintendo characters. I started to like Kiddy once I realized I hated every new Kong in DK64. If he returned I just hope there would be enough to differentiate him from DK. If they all partner with DK I can not see him ridding on DK's back.


I'm expecting DK to be the only character that can team up with others. So this secret character might have some sort of hovering ability as well. I hope we can mix and match the teams, especially in multiplayer.

It's Kiddy, K Rool or a completely new character. I can't see funky being playable or any Kong from DK 64.

What I would like to see at the end of Tropical Freeze is the Kong's realize that an armada of warships is heading to DK island and it is being lead by King K. Rool and his army of kremlings with the caption "Continued on 3DS."
