Square Enix's Beginning and End at once?
« on: June 07, 2003, 06:59:47 PM »
With the upcoming release of the PSP, will Square Enix (who only wanted to work on a handheld move over to Sony's portable device (note: not gaming system)?  If the disc based medium is cheaper, won't there be a better chance that S-E will just move their franchises back to Sony, or what about the possibility that Sony will pay to secure these franchises on the PSP.

sony will probably try to get square enix totally exclusive for their next console and probably the psp
i dont want that to happen though
the fund q money that went to square in the first place is nintendo's so i dont think that sony will be totally exclusive to sony
i would like to see square enix develope for nintendo more after crystal chronicals- its up to that game to see the future
if it sells well i bet we will see more square enix support for gba and especially gc

edit:  now that i think of it some more, i think square enix will develope for the highest user base systems
gba is very very popular and square enix would get lots of money for the games that they make
also- the gba is pretty cheap to develope for so if the costs on the psp are too high, then there is no point to waste the money if the user base isnt there
sony could get square enix if they market the psp correctly and get lots of good developers for it but as it stands i think the gba will still retain the support they are getting from square enix
i call the big one bitey.

if Final Fantasy 12 is realsed for gamecube or the next nintendo system, than I would feel better, knowing that Sqaure does want to work with nintendo.

I think Square's future in terms of which systems it will support will depend a lot on the success of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.  That's their very first branch into multiplatform support (I'm not counting GBA support since they don't support other portables) and it's success will likely determine whether or not it's worth it for Square to be a multiplatform developer.  Personally I'm a little worried since FF: CC looks like it's doomed to fail because of an idiotic GBA requirement that appears to be nothing more than a gimmick to fit Nintendo's request for GC/GBA connectivity.

If FF: CC is a success then Square may decide that there's money to be made with multiplatform development in which case they will likely continue to support both Sony and Nintendo systems.  However if it's a flop they might go back to being Sony-only particularly now that they'll be able to support the portable market without working with Nintendo.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony paid Square to make exclusive PSP games though they really wouldn't be able to make them completely Sony exclusive.  As long as Square Enix remains an independant company they'll be able to spread their games around to multiple consoles.  They might not choose to but they'll have the option.  Another factor depends on whether the company adopts a strategy more like Square or Enix.  Enix has always been a hardass for supporting the number one console and ONLY the number one console.  If that becomes the new philosophy for S-E then that pretty much means PS2 for consoles and GBA for portables.

So basically this post is a fancy way of saying "I don't know".

The merger was supposedly brought about so neither company had to be confined to one system and give them more ablity to make the games the way they want to.
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.

I think Square and Enix will just want to make 2D games with no FMV for the handheld market so there's no reason they wouldn't stay with the GBA. I don't think Square has any real loyalty to Sony and Enix has already stated its policy is to develope for the system with the largest userbase. In the handheld market, that's the GBA by a long-shot. But, honestly, even if Square-Enix did end up PSP exclusive somehow, it would still be a long ways from competing with the GBA. Even if every single person who's ever bought a FF or DQ game bought a PSP, it still wouldn't have anything close to the kind of userbase the GBA will have when the PSP is released over a year from now.
The only way the PSP could defeat the GBA would be if it somehow got all third-parties to abandone Nintendo like they did with the PSX and N64. That's just not going to happen. If anything, developers are apt to like the PSP less than the GBA because, with its superior hardware, there will be higher expectations for graphics which means longer dev-times.
Developers act like it's SO much trouble to develope for the GBA and its huge userbase. Now Sony has the nerve to ask them to put more effort into game design for its risky, upstart handheld. I don't see too many of them taking on the challenge.
