I personally think this off-load processing to the cloud concept for the Xbone is a farce, but maybe the technology will get there someday.

But really, I can't think of any hardware requirements that would prevent other consoles from doing this as well. Sony is doing something similar with GaiKai.

I doubt Nintendo would ever do this, but what's to stop a third party from releasing an always online game that uses cloud processing on the 360, PS3, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and the Wii U? WatchDogs is already rumoured to be always online for all platforms.

If I put my fanboy hat on, this could give more horsepower to the Wii U!  ;)

The only thing I can think of is that its splitting the userbase between those that are connected to the internet and those that aren't.  Unless games are made with the cloud in mind as an extra benefit then I can see it working.  Having a game developed requiring the Cloud would be a problem though.

Nope. Don't want it. Give me all the power the hardware can handle, or... well I just couldn't give a damn about any other option.

Exactly. The developers at Nintendo headquarters need to spend their time developing the actual platform, so I think we’d like to explore areas that they don’t have time for. For example the possibilities which are opened up by the combination of cloud technologies and new software paradigms like general purpose GPU programming.

Looks like Nintendo is developing it's on cloud system. XBox One's reveal caused this to get lost in the sea of headlines.

The only thing I can think of is that its splitting the userbase between those that are connected to the internet and those that aren't.  Unless games are made with the cloud in mind as an extra benefit then I can see it working.  Having a game developed requiring the Cloud would be a problem though.

A MMORPG would have the same issue.  Requiring the cloud is the same as requiring online and while I can't imagine every game requiring that, enough people are online these days that it would not limit such a game to niche status.  Effectively every single eShop game in the same boat as those without internet cannot even buy them.

I don't like the cloud concept because it will limit the life of a game.  Once the company disables the cloud the game is gone.  Your old copy won't work anymore.  Meanwhile I can go buy an old Atari, put a game in it and it works the same as it did over 35 years ago.  But this is an old hardcore gamer's concern.  Even people my own age largely see videogames as disposable entertainment and figure that by the time the cloud is gone it would just be some OLD game and old games suck and aren't worth playing.  This doesn't matter to most people.

What does matter to most however is the availability of the current videogame they are playing.  If your game conks out because your internet had a hiccup, that sucks.  It is largely the same issue as always-online DRM.  To me, having a single player game die because the internet went down is like your DVD not working when the cable is out.  The two should be independent (and to prove my point my internet connection just went out for like a minute while I was typing this).

And I think the real use of cloud gaming is to just have a streaming game service outright.  Why they hell do I need to have a copy of the game and some expensive machine that does SOME of the actions for me?  I don't buy a DVD and then have parts of the movie get streamed while parts are off the disc.  I think the real value in cloud based videogames is if the whole thing moved to a subscription service where you can stream whatever games you want.  If you're going to require an interent connection you might as well go all the way.  Now the technology might not be there yet but that's probably what people really want instead of some half-assed solution.  Hell a cloud based subscription service would eliminate any need for console generations as the game can determine it's own hardware - it would be like playing an arcade machine.

I won't buy cloud games.. and the industry will not give a **** because I'm just one guy.

Microsoft isn't splitting the userbase because online is required. Every Xbox One owner must be connected to the internet. It's not "always on," but it might as well be since Xbox One checks to see if you are connected at least once a day. If anything, Microsoft is splitting consumers into two groups, people willing to put up with that nonsense and people who are not. I fall into the latter. I'm currently on Verizon FiOS 15/5, my internet hasn't failed me yet so that hasn't been an issue. In fact, that was rarely an issue at my old place when I was on Comcast's slowest/cheapest plan. I just don't like the idea of a company mandating that I be connected to the internet. In the instance when my internet is down, I can't play Xbox One games because the console won't let me. F THAT NOISE. That's one of several reasons I'll never buy an Xbox One.

Looks like Wii U is the last old school video game console, one that plays video games in the least intrusive way possible. The only weird thing it does in that regard is the GamePad needs to be charged and on even if I'm not using it. I want video games console to just let me play video games and keep everything else optional. That's what I expect and I want it to stay that way. I'm not sure it's going to.

most multiplayer games cut back on graphics in online mode, now its less neccessary.

The wii u really doesnt need much added online power. There maybe an always on game from a third party developer. We're going to be seeing better looking games then what we have right now.

Cloud saves are one thing, additional computational power is another thing entirely.

Great article here:

It's kind of funny how MS is in the same boat as Nintendo has been in the past.  They've made some fantastic claims that their technology is going to change gaming forever.  Now, they have to prove it.  So far, much like Nintendo in the past, they've failed to demonstrate why any of this is necessary.  If anything, it feels like they've created this new, "awesome" tech, and they don't really know themselves what its potential is.  It feels like they've handed this tech off to devs and said "Here you go, figure it out!".

Minecraft always ran more efficiently when I was playing a server. It can be quite nice to have the load taken off. I wonder what a cloud based unity world would be like. When I was playing around with that engine it was super efficient at managing memory. It looked great and I have a shitty pc.

the cloud is a relatively new technology, i doubt this whole added processing deal is completely functional.

I think the whole cloud thing was a cop out for Microsoft knowing that their console is pretty average compared to with mid-end gaming rigs. This supposed next gen is turning into a sham, they are calling xbox one next gen when in reality is a box created to the same thing as the one they have now on the market.

The cloud is not new, and the whole server-side processing thing is legit - it just remains to see how beneficial it will be to the Xbox One.

They say "necessity is the mother of invention" and I think you can also turn it around and suggest that a good invention requires necessity to mother it.  When Nintendo comes up with something to accomodate game ideas they have they come up with the N64 analog stick.  When they come up with some dubious peripheral it's because they came up with the peripheral and then struggled to think of game ideas for it.  So if MS is making some games where they realize that the cloud will really help them out, then they've got something.  If they just throw the concept out there and assume it will inspire great ideas, well, every Wii game with waggle controls shows that that does not work.
