Let's hear it for Namco!
« on: June 03, 2003, 11:17:47 AM »
Watching the drama unfold with Acclaim has gotten me thinking.  There was a time when I really didn't care about Namco any more than I cared about Acclaim.  I was thinking of all the Namco games I have played in my life, and why all of a sudden I was so pleased with them.  I mean, I am not really a hardcore Pacman fan, although I have played the game.  I think the only Namco game I played between Tekken 3 and Pacman was a few hours of Tales of Phantasia.

However, they all of a sudden popped up and are really starting to gain my interest pretty damn fast.  I am not really sure if they are making better games than they used to, or I am just noticing them now, but they make some pretty fine games.  Soul Calibur II, Star Fox, I-Ninja, Tales of Symphonia, Tekken 4, etc.

Is it just me, or have they really gotten good all of a sudden?

They got "good" during the Playstation days when they released the Ridge Racer and Tekken series.  Before that I didn't think of them as anything beyond Pac-man (which I've never really cared much for).  I guess they just needed that 3D medium to shine.  Still I'm not that impressed by them.  Aside for Soul Calibur 2 I'm not really interested in any of their future titles.  I'm also really disappointed with what I've seen of Star Fox thus far.  I would consider Nacmo a developer that's capable of making great games but isn't consistent at it.  I've got a similar opinion of Konami.

I-ninja looks like it could be good. hopefully some of the stuff they are putting out for the cube is good. and star fox better be good. it was truely a great game for the 64. i hope they can improve things by now and the time it releases.

They have Monolith Soft. That alone makes them rule.

Yes they are pretty good. Though they kind of disappeared during the SNES days.

I have to agree with Strange on this one. Namco has been making top games since the industry started. They didn't just get good on playstation. Namco probably getting noticed by a lot of Nintendo gamers now that the Nintendo/Namco feud is over. There was very little Namco support for the SNES and N64 because of the hatred between Nintendo and Namco. Now that the hatchet has been buried Nintendo gamers are getting more of Namco's titles and seeing what type of developer they've always been.

Namco and Nintendo did hate each other...

But, Namco has always been a pretty amazing developer.  Soul Caliber is hailed by many as the best fighter ever, and that is a hard feat.

They're friends now, each is a third of the Triforce thingy.

I'm eagerly anticipating Star Fox 2.  It is looking very much fun

IIRC, there were two developers who made Galaga... Namco was one... I don't remember who made the other one.

But those are VERY old games.  I don't remember anything I played by Namco in the NES/SNES/N64/PSX eras, other than Tekken 3.

And to whoever said that Namco is great because they have Monolith, I heartily agree.  Xenogears/saga was one game that I was meaning to mention in my first post but somehow forgot.

Namco made the wonderful Smash Tennis on SNES. Until then, I never knew a Tennis game could hold my attention for more than five minutes. Too bad they screwed up the sequel on PSone..
