Online Play Coming to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in Japan
« on: February 21, 2013, 06:47:52 AM »

It isn't pretty, but gamers will finally be able to take the 3DS version of the game online.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33389

Online play is coming to Monster Hunter 3 (tri) G, known as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in the West, for the NIntendo 3DS in Japan. To enable the online connection for the 3DS version of the game, players will first need to purchase a special LAN adapter for their Wii U. From there, they will need download a special application on the Wii U that will allow the 3DS version of the game to be playable online. The application is limited to one player per Wii U.

There is currently no word if this method of online connection will appear in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in the West.

I don't get it.  Why can't the feature use the native WiFi of the 3DS?
I got hooked on the white stuff back in the 70s.

The Wii U gamepad is more suitable for communication than the 3DS. I think its a design decision so that all online players have a more consistent experience when communicating with other players.

It also works in favour of Capcom's in getting you to buy both versions of the game.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that by using this application oh the Wii U, it acts as if you are just connecting locally to other 3DS's. As for why gamers NEED a wired LAN adapter for the thing, the consistent experience that MrPhishfood is talking about is an explanation. Not one that we won't to hear, though. This is a janky way to get the game online.

If this is for the west as well,  I'm all set.  I may not need the WiiU version.

Which is why it's not coming west for a good while, if at all.

Since it's essentially the same game on 3DS and Wii U, I don't think we'll have to wait too long for the Wii U version if the 3DS version is coming out in the middle of next month. I'm more concerned about the US release of Monster Hunter 4 which will likely slip to 2014 though if Capcom released a Wii U version, I'd really, really be interested in it.

I hope any Wii or Wii U LAN adapter will suffice. It would be odd if the game needs a special Wii U LAN adapter in order for the online multiplayer to function.

It's nice that they are providing extra functionality to the game, but this is a bit hap hazard.

Before anyone uses this as a criticism of Nintendo, this is basically the exact same method they used to give online play to the PSP versions of Monster Hunter by connecting to the PS3. And something to remember there is that functionality never made it outside of Japan.

If anything, this should be used as criticism towards Capcom. I'm glad it's there, but it is just as asinine as it was on PSP. Not really sure why Capcom insists on offering online this way.

Yep, its called Ad-hoc Party  In fact in the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD on Playstation 3 they built in Ad-hoc Party for the online.

Since this method requires a Wii U, seems like you're better off getting the Wii U version if you want online play. Though I guess since this is for Japan, this option is for the people who bought the game before the Wii U version came out.

It's certainly not Nintendo's fault, but regardless of whether or not there's precedent for this sort of setup it's still pretty silly. It's 2013. If your intention is to create a game which relies primarilly on multiplayer then provide an accessible way of getting playing it online. These ad-hoc solutions and specialised pieces of hardware are ridiculous.

If this game had included online I would have bought it day one (I loved Tri). I don't own a Wii U and don't see myself getting one any time soon. I have no intention of buying a Monster Hunter game that I can only play single player.

Wait a minute... I thought both the 3DS and Wii U version of Monster Hunter would be available next month in the states!

Perhaps you can. I can't because none of my friends own a 3DS, and even if they did the last thing they'd be interested in playing would be Monster Hunter. So...
